The food was incredible, let me tell you that lady put her foot up in that food, it was made with nothing but love and soul. I had the catfish platter with collard green soup and mac and cheese, and my boyfriend had the jambalaya pasta. They even packed our meals in to-go plates so we could take our leftovers with us, which was such a thoughtful touch.
Portland isn’t really known for soul food, but hands down, this is the best place to find it out here. The vibe of the restaurant was comfortable and authentically “old school”. Right down to the Anita Baker playing in the background and the full on hot sauce selection. It truly felt like I was eating at my auntie’s house.
I could not recommend this place more. YOU NEED TO COME HERE!!!! 10/10
Don’t wait to try this!
Will be returning for sure… I recommend everyone stop and give it a try!
The Macaroni and cheese tasted like Velveta cheese!! It’s not good. The Collard Greens seem to come from a can. The rice in the Seafood Gumbo was def minute rice. The gumbo has a heavy seafood smell which…..give or take depending on your preference and it was a bit thin. Would I order again? Absolutely not. Yall trying to take advantage of people in Portland with this mockery of food.
La Bontemps – A True Portland Gem
I had an incredible experience at La Bontemps in Portland, Oregon. The food was absolutely exquisite, and the family‑style atmosphere made the whole place feel warm, welcoming, and genuine. The red snapper was so flavorful that I didn’t dip it in the tartar sauce a single time — and that says a lot. Every dish had real depth and seasoning, from start to finish.
This spot is honestly one of Portland’s best‑kept secrets. The quality of the food doesn’t match the price in the best way possible — you get way more than you pay for. La Bontemps is a win‑win all the way around, and I’m already looking forward to going back.
