I’m a coast-to-coast solo traveler with a penchant for classic American BBQ. With that said, I have favorite places all over the country, most of which are small-town backroad BBQ joints in the exact areas you’d expect: Kansas City, St. Louis, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, and the Carolinas. So naturally, I never expected to stumble upon a place like Back Alley BBQ in Chandler, Arizona of all places.
Alas, here we are.
I’m picky about BBQ. It’s common for me to like one of the meats at a shop, sometimes two, but not all of them. Hear my words, EVERY DAMN ONE (of the four-meat combo I had) at Back Alley is delicious! Brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and the sausage…. ALL amazing.
And the price? $29 for a four-meat combo platter is WILD. Not just for the area, but for the amount of food, and the quality. I’m impressed all-around.
The sauces?! Only three, but that’s all you need! It’s a perfect mix with a spicy red BBQ, a classic original sweet/slight spice BBQ, and the star of the show, the Carolina-style Gold BBQ! I’m going to be making special trips back because I’ll be dreaming of the Gold sauce alone.
We also had the Brisket Mac-N-Cheese Bowl, Peach Hot-Honey Cheesecake, and Rice Krispy Treat. Each of them did not disappoint! Flavor/texture of the cheesecake is perfection! I’m also a sucker for an easy to-go dessert too so the Rice Krispy treat was perfectly fit for that.
The owner stopped by several times to talk and ask our thoughts about everything. He’s a gem of a human and you can tell he genuinely cares about the opinions of his patrons. Don’t be afraid to ask to speak to him or give him your own thoughts. He’s an open human and happy to listen! Don’t come here and complain, give the man a chance to make it right or possibly change your mind!
In all seriousness, give this place a try for yourself. I almost didn’t stop because I tend to be disappointed by BBQ out West, and man, I would’ve been missing out! Try it, talk to the owner, enjoy the atmosphere, and have some good damn BBQ in the American Southwest!

I ordered the 4 meat combo pulled pork, brisket, jalapeño cheddar sausage, ribs, coleslaw, potato salad, ranch beans, and two cocktails: the banana-pudding espresso martini and the Boston Street Punch. Everything was delicious – the meats were tender and smoky, the sides were fresh and well-seasoned, and the cocktails were tasty and perfectly balanced.
Standout: the jalapeño cheddar sausage – seriously fire. Friendly, attentive service and a relaxed vibe made this a fantastic meal. Don’t sleep on this spot – highly recommended.
Also I have celiac and they offered to change their gloves and cleaned their station without me having to ask! So awesome it’s gluten friendly!

They also had live music with singers who were amazing. We really enjoyed the vibe the entire time we were there. The manager even stopped by to greet us, which was a really nice touch.
Our server, Milee, was AMAZING—so sweet and attentive. Even with a full dining room, she made sure we were well taken care of and the wait time was still fast. The whole staff was outstanding.
We will definitely be back! If you’re in the area, you’ve got to try this place—it’s well worth it.
The restaurant offers a variety of sauces, including Spicy, Original, and Golden, each of which was delicious. Not only was the food amazing, but the atmosphere was also remarkably clean and welcoming.
Adrian, the chef, was exceptionally friendly and approached us to inquire about the quality of the food and engage in a brief conversation.
We are excited to come back to try more food!
