We dined at Oakes & Evelyn in Montpelier for New Year’s Eve, and the entire evening was spectacular from start to finish.

The special prix fixe menu felt thoughtfully curated and celebratory without being overdone. Each course was creative and beautifully executed — dishes like crispy duck confit Caesar, king salmon crudo, housemade tagliatelle with ’nduja, and perfectly cooked ribeye showed both technical skill and imagination. The flavors were layered and balanced, and every plate felt intentional.

The cocktails were just as inventive as the food. Their signature drinks — with combinations like mezcal and lavender, duck fat–washed bourbon, rhubarb amaro, or fig and stout — were playful yet refined. You can tell the bar program is just as serious as the kitchen.

Beyond the food and drinks, the atmosphere made the night. It was lively and festive, but still intimate enough to enjoy conversation. There was a warm energy in the room — the kind of place where you feel like you’re part of something special rather than just dining out.

Oakes & Evelyn delivered an elevated, creative, and celebratory New Year’s Eve experience. If you’re looking for upscale dining in Montpelier with originality, strong cocktails, and a vibrant atmosphere, this spot absolutely delivers.

Great place for patient, open-minded people who enjoy dining experiences. If you’re big on substitutions, hunting for “a good deal,” or need a quick meal, this probably isn’t your spot. The food is thoughtful — they seem to care about the tiny details, like a little chili crisp on a kimchee deviled egg for texture or the pickled veg and cilantro to balance the richness of the oxtail grilled cheese (so good). The duck-fat-washed bourbon, the fry on the mushrooms in the bao bun, the carefully placed basil on the top of my drink that I smell as I take my first sip, the almost savory sesame cookie on the dessert — everything is so intentionally done.

Even when there’s something I wouldn’t normally order, it somehow works. Like, I’d never order that sesame cookie on its own, but with the rest of the dessert? Genius. Same with the “burnt toast” complaint someone mentioned… the char on mine actually balanced the crab dip perfectly. And if something doesn’t land, I’d just ask my server as everyone has been super nice. We’ve seen many of the same staff for almost a year now, which says a lot.

We keep coming back to see what new combos they come up with. So far, zero disappointments. Current favorite menu item is the Scallop and Pork Belly dish.

One of our absolute favorite places to eat. The food quality, flavors, and atmosphere are top level. We’ve come here for many years, and the culinary experience is always out of this world. This is a “must visit” destination if you consider yourself a true food aficionado.

New restaurant in Woodstock Vermont! Great atmosphere, delicious food. Caesar salad, beef tenderloin and gnocchi amazing! Ended with coconut crème brûlée. Will absolutely return and highly recommend!

Aug 2025: This was our second visit and we didn’t enjoy it as much. We both had the crispy octopus, too spicy for my tastes. I had the steak. The meat was a proper medium rare but it was topped with a pasta that was covered in a cheesy sauce that didn’t go well with meat.
The soft shell crab bao is terrific. My steak was good but it was cooked a little beyond the medium rare that I ordered.
They have outdoor dining but they won’t reserve an outdoor table however they will put a note on your reservation that says you want it.

Food was great- took forever to come out though (like 45+ mins). Service was solid. I’d skip the mocktails- good wine list though.

Oakes & Evelyn isn’t just dinner — it’s a full dining experience. The bartender is like a mad scientist in the best way, always experimenting and elevating even the classics with incredible flavor.

The food is thoughtful and beautifully plated. The Branzino is hands-down the best thing I’ve eaten in Vermont since moving here — crispy, flavorful, and balanced perfectly with bright pickled veggies and that ginger chimichurri (I could drink it).

This is one of those rare spots where the care behind every cocktail and dish really shines. It’s not fast or cheap, but if you’re after creativity, flavor, and a night that feels a little special, it’s absolutely worth it. Casual vibe, top-tier experience.

Though small, the intimate setting is perfect for a date night. The menu is limited but it’s a great variety of thoughtful, elegant choices, and varies seasonally. The waitstaff was wonderful and the jazz band that evening added to the wonderful experience. Will be returning for sure.

Only rated atmosphere 4 stars because of how close the tables are to one another. Great food, friendly, swift and attentive staff. Prime location for downtown. Close to everything. Didn’t take advantage but the small print on the menu even suggests that they can veganize some of the dishes. Price was fitting for the quality and portion size. Minus the mushroom bao bun… probably a little steep at the $8 or $9 charge. Went here for our 18y anniversary. Unfortunately we don’t consume dairy so no desert for us. We would gladly return to try some of the other fish dishes or perhaps one of their no dairy vegan versions of a dish. Calamari was amazing, first time I could guarantee I was having the real thing…reminded me of a small French restaurant in Paris or somewhere similar. Worth the stop!

This place means a lot to me.

Was traveling from Montreal to Boston in mid April 2025, had a stop at Montpelier by accident, was forced to spend the night in the town and I didn’t know where to go.

Walked into this restaurant, bartender Tobin served me with great drinks, and provided me with a lot of information about the town and helped me in any way he can.

Atmosphere here is great, had conversations with some staff and they are all very very welcoming and friendly people!!

If I ever come back to Montpelier I would definitely visit again! (Last time unfortunately I didn’t try much food, but the options on the menu seem delicious) Also recommended this place to any of my friends who were visiting/passing by, they all liked it a lot.
