I’m so happy a café like this opened in Closter!
It’s a hidden gem.
It feels like a place dreaming of becoming the Williamsburg of Bergen County — though it’s not quite there yet…
All the menu items are vegan-friendly, and there’s even an art station inside.
It’s pet-friendly too, so you can bring your dog.

The staff were very kind as well.

I found this café after lunch, and it turned out to be a great surprise.
It’s a very unique and interesting spot, offering a variety of smoothies, coffee, and light snacks.
The overall vibe is artsy and relaxed, making it a great place to unwind.

One of the standout features is the art room— they have separate sections where you can draw or paint, which adds a fun and personal touch.
The outdoor area also looked inviting and playful. I’d definitely come back to explore more.

Very adorable place with a beautiful atmosphere. The gluten free sweets are so great and the dates coffee was phenomenal. I loved the little chunks.

Celiac / gluten free safe and wonderful food! Zero risk for cross contamination as there are zero gluten containing items on premises. Enjoyed a mango smoothie and beet salad, can’t wait to return to try more. Very chill and relaxing environment, wish we could have stayed longer!

We got two bowls and they were amazing. Cilantro forward, which I love, but I know not everyone’s favorite. The food was light, fresh and delicious.

We got cashew milk lattes and we did not like them. They make their milks (cashew & coconut) and ours were very gritty/chunky. They kindly remade them & it was better, but it was still not something either of us enjoyed.

I visited Roots Cafe yesterday after a job I had in Closter, NJ. I’m gluten-free and vegan, and finding good food is sometimes a little difficult. A google search quickly led me to Roots Cafe, and when I saw their site and the reviews, I knew I had to stop in. This place is so cute! There are plants everywhere, there is cozy seating, there is an art section where they sometimes host art lessons, and they have a stage where they hold open mics, live music and other amazing events. I ordered the avocado toast and a quinoa bowl and the food was delicious. I also ordered one of every sweet they had on display. I loved everything. Before leaving I also realized they had natural local honey and baked goods from Rising Above Bakery in Nyack, NY. I bought those items also and I am happy to say, those items were also super delicious. I am super excited to go back. I almost forgot to say that the staff and service was also amazing. Thank you for a greay experience!

We stopped into Roots Café in Closter early this morning on our way to my 9-year-old son’s hockey game and didn’t realize they weren’t officially open yet. Instead of turning us away, the owner kindly welcomed us in and said they had coffee brewing if we’d like a cup.

He added, “As long as you don’t mind dogs,” and we walked into a room full of the most beautiful, friendly dogs. It was honestly the perfect pre-game therapy session. Parker loved it, and so did I.

To top it off, they wouldn’t even let us pay for the coffee.

That kind of generosity and warmth says everything about a place. Roots Café isn’t just great place – it’s community. We’ll definitely be back.

The kitchen is largely in open view, which makes it easy to see that the food is made with love, everything I’ve tried is delightful (so far my favorite meal is the sweet potato chili and top magic elixir is the iced cacao). I usually get a coffee with honey and, while the room is often abuzz, have no problem focusing on work. It helps that the company and crew are wonderfully easy to converse with when a break is advisable. There are pleasant surprises in the form of events from time to time as they continue to build a supportive and nourishing community, The outdoor spaces in back and front are cute and cozy uses of the available room. There is a marvelous van with delightful goat facts in the back and it amazing. The music is always different and splendid, plus lots of local musicians come through to find supportive crowd. The staff is deeply committed to nurturing lots of life, including artwork and plant-life and this is apparent throughout the space. The space is spacious, ample room to wander and discover delightful little additions by regional craftspeople and vendors and artists.

This place is special. It feels welcoming and vibrant. The food is wholesome and delicious. I absolutely loved the iced coffee crusher I had today – sweetened only with dates, cashews, and cinnamon. It’s great that they’ve always got crafts going in a side room – my 6-year-old loves accompanying me there specifically for the creative opportunity.
