First time trying PadThai Cafe. Had high expectations due to the good reviews as well as the scarcity of Thai food in Johannesburg.

Thoroughly impressed with the quality, taste and freshness of the food, it felt like I was back in Thailand.

We ordered the Spring Rolls, Prawn Cakes and Tom Yum soup for starters. The Tom Yum soup was the star of the show due to the flavours and spiciness.

For mains we ordered the Red Chilli paste noodles and the Pad Thai shrimp. Both delicious!

The waiters were very attentive and service was great overall.

Will definitely return

One of the best hidden gems in Joburg! Simply Asia? Forget about it! If you’re looking for authentic Thai cuisine , then give Padthai Cafe a visit!
This was my third visit and the owner (Thai lady) welcomed me with a warm smile as she remembers me☺️
Every time I visit , I’ll always order their fried wings along with something new.
Today was, the prawn panang curry, pork krapow, pork meat balls, prawn cakes with a side of sticky rice .
Everything was flavour bomb
The owner offered me a local speciality of green curry with chicken feet and duck blood (something I’m familiar with) and no regrets.. ate it all up because everything was so well spiced and balanced !
Will always visit again!

We visited PadThai Cafe on a busy Friday night, and although the restaurant only has about seven tables, it feels super cozy and authentic. The intimate setting really adds to the experience, and the waiters were friendly and welcoming.

For starters, we had the tom yum soup with prawn — hands down the best soup I’ve ever had in my life. It was so flavorful and perfectly balanced that I’d come back just for that alone. We also enjoyed the fried chicken wings, which were crunchy and served with a lovely sweet chili dipping sauce. The morning glory veggies were divine, and the veggie spring rolls were tasty as well.

For mains, we had the chicken Pad Thai. The portion was huge and delicious. They used thinner flat noodles, which is different from my preferred thick flat noodles, but it was still very enjoyable.

Overall, PadThai Cafe is a fantastic spot for authentic Thai food in Johannesburg, especially if you’re a fan of great flavors and a cozy vibe.

A small restaurant with a cozy and characterful interior. The food was surprisingly good, I didn’t expect to find such real Thai flavors here in SA. The staff are warm and friendly, which makes the dining experience even better.

Small Gem with BIG, Authentic Thai Flavor!
I absolutely have to give a shoutout to this wonderful, small Thai restaurant. While it may not look like much from the outside, the food here is a true revelation! Everything we tried was simply outstanding and genuinely took me back to the incredible street food I’ve had in Thailand.
The standout dish, and one I cannot recommend highly enough, is the Tom Yum Soup. It was perfectly balanced—that signature blend of spicy, sour, and aromatic herbs was spot on. It’s clear they don’t skimp on the traditional ingredients like lemongrass and galangal. This is authentic, soul-satisfying Thai cooking at its best.
Key Takeaways
Atmosphere: Small and cozy, clearly focused on great food.
Must-Try: The Tom Yum Soup is an absolute winner.
Overall: This is one of the most authentic Thai dining experiences I’ve had outside of Thailand.
A friendly tip for future diners: Because the space is small and the food is clearly popular, I highly recommend you call ahead to see if they have tables available. If they’re fully booked, do yourself a favor and at least grab takeaway—you won’t regret it! This place is an awesome hidden gem and is now my new go-to for real Thai food.

This must be the best Thai food in Johannesburg. This cosy little restaurant is decorated with traditional Thai interior that takes you to Thailand for just a moment. Food is freshly prepared by a Thai chef and this would be the closest you will get to real Thai food. Their Tom Yum Rice and Pad Thai is two of my favorite dishes but the rest of the menu is equally great. To visit this place is like stepping outside Johannesburg straight into Thailand for just a moment. They have limited tables and it is best to secure a seat with a reservation especially if you are part of a group of 4 or more.

I actually have no idea why this restaurant is so high rated. It is actually the worst Thai restaurant I have been so far and the worst Thai restaurant in Joburg. We ordered 4 mains, 2 soups and 3 starters, with all variety included like beef, curry, fish, chicken, prawns and seafood. The padthai noodle is overcooked and soft. The type of noodle that was cooked is not the one. Both soups and the curry were disappointed. I never seen coconut soup that ain’t white and it does not taste like coconut and tom yum. I believe any other fast food store would have a better chicken wing than this. Curry got no curry flavored. I understood why we the only table on a Saturday dining in for Lunch. The restaurant does not stock up as well. Staff is not trained well. They only have one waitress working in the restaurant. The staff cannot make bubble tea.

Stumbled upon this Thai restaurant, and was super excited to find a Thai restaurant in Johannesburg! The owner is so lovely and friendly.

The portions are big and great for sharing! We ordered the prawn phad Thai, vermicelli noodles, duck noodles, papaya salad and Thai tea.

I was disappointed to see the papaya salad filled with so many pieces of lemon (which were inedible and still had stickers on the lemons) and quite pricey for the little you get.

Food was delicious but did take long to come out. There was loadshedding at the time.

Satay was so dry even my dogs didn’t want to eat and to add more cashew noodles was a big disaster , noodle was thick with strong flavours of Soya and burnt veggies .
Food tastes more like Chinese takeaway and lacks Thai flavour
I wonder how is this restaurant even getting 5 stars because this is the second time I gave them a try and sorry never going back again
