The restroom was in extremely poor condition — visibly dirty, poorly maintained, and unhygienic. It’s not difficult to wipe down surfaces, add new fixtures, paint over years of scuffs, dirt and makeup and design a nice bathroom. If the bathroom looks like this, imagine what the kitchen might look like.
The lack of care extended beyond the restroom. The wall next to our table had visible stains and residue, which added to the overall impression that cleanliness and maintenance were not a priority. I don’t understand how any server would seat guests next to a wall that was visibly dirty like that.
To make matters worse, we saw a cockroach in the restaurant, right beside our table. When this was mentioned to staff, the response was dismissive rather than apologetic, with the situation brushed off as “normal for Florence.” That sad excuse is simply not true. I live in Florence. I know very well that this is not standard, nor acceptable.
Service was equally disappointing. We had to ask three times for the bread to be warmed, and each time we were met with excuses, not action. We had to be very clear that putting bread in an oven is not difficult – despite being charged €4 per person for cold bread.
One dish was described on the menu as an “asparagus soufflé.” What arrived bore no resemblance to a soufflé in either structure or preparation. A proper soufflé requires aeration from whipped egg whites and should rise with a light, structured texture. This dish had no lift, no structure, and no aeration. It was closer to a loose purée or cream and was inaccurately described. Anyone who has studied food would not call this dish a soufflé.
Additionally, part of my dining companion’s order was forgotten entirely.
This restaurant presents itself as refined, but the reality is a lack of care, accountability, and basic hospitality. Between the hygiene issues, poor service, and dismissive attitude, this is not a place I would return to or recommend.
The table settings were beautiful and the décor is romantic and quaint. We had a nice table for two in the front dining room and they have these interesting small tables they place at the side of these smaller tables to accommodate other items that won’t fit on the table, such as wine, bread, or (in our case) the huge T-Bone steak they’re known for!
Our server picked a great wine to go with the steak and promptly brought it over. We did have a hard time deciding what to eat, as their menu has so many appetizing options. I knew I definitely wanted to try their Tagliolini con fonduta di pecorino a tartufo fresco – The description looked amazing and I’m currently on a pecorino and truffle kick. A couple next to us ordered the La Bistecca alla Foirentina and it looked amazing, so we opted for the same, along with a side of roasted potatoes. Our incredible server warned us that this might be a lot of food to finish and suggested we go with their half portion side of this particular pasta dish, as that’s an option, which we did.
Everything was EXCELLENT! The pasta came out right before the steak, it was piping hot, fresh, and looked amazing… smelled amazing too! Flavors were what I hoped for and dream of when I’m not in Italy, where it’s so easy to get such amazing dishes! Then the steak – OUTSTANDING! It was perfectly cooked, sliced, and served. Looked amazing and tasted even better! Those potatoes were incredibly tasty as well.
We saved a little room for dessert and enjoyed what we got. Overall, very romantic and amazing dinner to be had here – highly recommend stopping in, but make reservations!
I ordered the risotto and tiramisu—both were exceptional. The risotto was creamy and full of flavor, cooked to perfection, and clearly made with care and quality ingredients. The tiramisu was light, well-balanced, and a perfect sweet ending.
Service was excellent: discreet, elegant, and attentive without being intrusive. It’s the kind of refined hospitality that feels effortless but adds so much to the overall experience.
Oliviero is a true gem in Florence—ideal for a refined and authentic Italian lunch. I highly recommend it.
