In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. This place is a gem. Fair prices (and generous sign-up/birthday freebies…an entire meal), super cute atmosphere, and some of the most delicious food I’ve had in a while. Server was very kind.
Had a breakfast plate and dinner plate (I’d recommend the bigger portion since it comes with AMAZING cornbread and little soup…and I thought I didn’t even like cornbread). We couldn’t nail down the best food if we tried.
Place was very mild at 7pm, and we waited no time at all before the huge portions were in front of us. We’re big eaters and we took plenty home.
All that to say, we will be back!

I love this diner! The portions are generous, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere has such a cozy, homey vibe. Tehya was the sweetest — her service was truly top-notch. She checked on us at just the right times, kept my coffee refilled, and genuinely made the whole experience even better.

Food was really good and service was AMAZING! David was our server and was the only server we really saw taking care of 8 full tables. He definitely deserves some recognition. He was very sweet and just amazing at taking care of all the tables quickly.
Pricing wasn’t horrible but some things were a little high. But they had enough options to choose from with reasonable prices.

My family and I came by this morning for breakfast, and we had a lovely time! Ellen far exceeded our expectations with her service! Not only was she speedy and attentive to the needs we did express, she was thoughtful and anticipated many of our needs in advance! Additionally, as a large party of 7, she went above and beyond to make sure that not only were our orders correct, but that they were delicious and satisfying as well! When recommending Black Bear to my friends, I will make sure they ask for Ellen by name!

Such a wonderful diner! The Almond Bear Claw is simply to die for! Every dish we ordered was delicious! Our server, Tehya, was so attentive and friendly. She was a delight to all guests, and really provided an excellent experience all the way around. Definitely worth the drive if you don’t live locally! We will be sure to stop in again soon!

The staff was amazing friendly out going very helpful…..very accommodating attentive to all our needs…..David our server was nice fun cordial. Our son who is three has some learning developmental needs had drop some things behide him an the lady behide us was so so super rude to him an us…our server David was nice enough to move us to a different table.we were out celebrating my wife’s birthday early….David server went to his manger an was able to get my wife a free dessert of her choice an manger personally came to our table another with another server to apologize to us for how rude that lady was to us….they even let me get a free dessert as well an kids too an also our on way out they gave us some free money coupon.vouchers to come back an eat or spend in their shop….I have nothing but high praise for this restaurant an helpful caring staff……they get in infinity stars from .me God bless them all in their every day life ..thank you David for making our day an meal fun an laughter an a smile

The Black Bear Diner is one of our favorite places to go for breakfast. We find the atmosphere warm and cozy; the booths and tables spacious and comfortable. When we walk into the diner, we are welcomed with a smile and a warm hello. We always request to sit in J.D.’s section (and on the rare occasion when he’s off, then we like to sit in Ellen’s section). And Jocelyn is also a favorite of ours. Keep up the good work Team Black Bear and thanks for keeping us well fed.

Came to eat with my family and would like to say everyone on night shift is so kind and very in tune with the needs of others! Our server Joslyn was on top of everything! Never had to ask for a refill, and had napkins and butter with our food immediately, servers who care are so hard to find, the manger Julia was very sweet to us and even talked with us for sometime which is very different from other restaurants! It made us feel so at home. thank you so much we will be back!

What happened to blackbear? When it first opened it was pretty decent. I ate there this morning, just a simple small breakfast. It made me feel sick after eating. My stomach is still churning. It smells of dirty wet dog in the restaurant. When you get just 2 bacon and 2 eggs paying $13 (ridiculously priced)… the server lady was nice at least but the food is very poor quality and taste. Unfortunately it is one of the only places within walking distance of my work, so I dont really have much else to go to wait.
