Good spot, but not sure about all the hype

We stumbled into Benny John’s after spending the day in the Diamond District, and overall it was a solid experience — definitely worth trying, but a few things didn’t fully match the hype.

We split the porterhouse between three people, and for $120 it was honestly a great value. The steak was cooked well and tasted great, but I’ve definitely had better porterhouse at higher-end steakhouses (not naming names). Still, for the price, no complaints at all.

Appetizers were the biggest letdown. For three people, the portions were extremely small — definitely not shareable, which was surprising. The bread didn’t come with anything special, so I skipped that and went straight to the apps.

The drinks were a big highlight — they took a little bit of time to come out, but once they did, they were absolutely phenomenal. Really well made and definitely top-tier quality.

Dessert was another strong point. The tiramisu was phenomenal — perfect portion, great flavor, and prepared really well. The Key Lime pie, on the other hand, was tiny and not really worth it.

Overall, it’s a nice place with some standout items, but expect smaller portions.

Hidden gem with a great ambiance. Perfect for a proper dinner, but without the extra fuss.

We had the (50oz!!!) Tomahawk Ribeye special, sweet ‘n’ spicy brussel sprouts and steak fries.

The staff were wonderful, the drinks surprisingly creative and food was truly the best I’ve had in a while. Definitely adding this to my casual-but-elevated rotation in NYC. Our waiter, Dennis, was the “cherry on top” for our evening.

Oyster rockerfeller – 3/5 temp was cool.. oysters were so small, it was mostly creamed spinach.

Chicken skewer – 5/5- juicy flavorful and onions are a good compliment

Beef skewer -3.5/5 cooked well, not as well seasoned.

Bolognese – 3/5

Carbonara- 3/5

Caesar salad 2/5

Mixed green salad 4/5

Ribeye- cooked well and offered to be cut from the bone. Underseasoned.

Quick service, attentive and responsive.

The soup was delicious and perfect for a cold day! Dinner was also good and had great flavor. Desserts were filling and good portions.

Overall a good spot, average cost for the area.

We went to Benny John’s for a nightcap since it was close to our hotel and advertised all day happy hour. The happy hour drink selection is somewhat limited, but they still offer a good variety at a great price. I had the sauvignon blanc & my wife had the sangria. The sauvignon blanc was as expected & sangria was a dry sangria & not overly sweet.

I had the apple cobbler for dessert which is really the reason for my review — and it was delicious. It was served warm and paired with vanilla ice cream.

The staff was pleasant. Overall, a great spot for a casual nightcap and dessert.

Absolutely top-notch from start to finish.

From the warm, professional service to the execution on every plate and glass, everything impressed us. We went with the day’s special—calamari and clams—and it was outstanding. The squid was exceptionally tender and the sauce had a clean, balanced heat that lifted the seafood without overpowering it. The clams were sweet and briny, and the whole dish felt really well thought-out.

Our server’s recommendations were spot-on across the board, including the wine pairings. You could tell they knew the menu and actually listened to what we like.

The ribeye was the showstopper: beautifully seared, juicy, and cooked exactly to our requested doneness. It had that buttery richness you want in a great steak, with seasoning that hit the sweet spot, flavorful but not salty.

Service was attentive without being intrusive; great pacing between courses, water and wine topped up at the right moments, and friendly check-ins that never felt rushed. Altogether, it made for one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in a long time.

Manuel and his team took great care of us. We had a group of 12 and the food and the service was excellent. It was a little warm in the room but overall very good!

Great service from the very beginning. Food was excellent, but my favorite part was dessert! Apple crumble and tiramisu. I think our server was the bartender and he was amazing! There was a wonderful woman (server) walking around making sure we were also doing well. Super sweet!
