I have eaten in there many times over the years, but I won’t be ordering for delivery again. Huge disappointment!
If you’re craving authentic New Mexican cuisine that wraps you in warmth like a cozy adobe hug, look no further than Papa Felipe’s in Albuquerque. This iconic spot has been a staple since 1977, blending fresh ingredients with bold flavors that scream Southwest soul. From the moment we walked in, the inviting atmosphere—complete with that classic, unpretentious diner vibe—set the stage for an unforgettable meal.
We kicked things off with their complimentary chips and salsa, a rare treat in today’s world where most places nickel-and-dime you for every extra. These weren’t just any chips; they were perfectly crisp, warm, and paired with a vibrant, house-made salsa bursting with fresh tomatoes, onions, and just the right kick of green chiles. It was the kind of starter that transports you back to simpler times, and we couldn’t get enough!
For the main event, I dove into their legendary enchilladas with seaaoned beef—tender, slow-cooked beef nfused with rich red chile, wrapped in a fluffy tortilla, then blanketed in melted cheese and more of that addictive sauce. Topped with a sunny-side-up egg, it was pure indulgence, the yolks mingling with the spicy gravy for a breakfast-for-dinner dream. On the side, crispy home fries with caramelized onions added that perfect crunch, while a dollop of cool sour cream and a fresh salad with diced tomatoes cut through the heat beautifully. My companion went for a classic beef burrito, smothered in green chile sauce and cheese, served alongside creamy refried beans and more of those golden potatoes—every bite was hearty, flavorful, and utterly satisfying.
And just when we thought it couldn’t get better, they surprised us with free sopapillas at the end! Light, pillowy, and dusted with cinnamon sugar, drizzled with honey—they were the sweet finale that sealed the deal. The food here isn’t just delicious; it’s made with heart, using time-honored recipes that highlight New Mexico’s famous chiles without overwhelming the palate.
Service was friendly and efficient, prices are wallet-friendly (especially those lunch specials on the menu), and the portions? Generous enough to leave you plotting your next visit. Papa Felipe’s isn’t flashy—it’s real, reliable, and reminds you why local legends endure. Five stars all the way; Albuquerque wouldn’t be the same without it! If you’re in town, do yourself a favor and stop by—you’ll leave full, happy, and already reminiscing.
Our server was a champ. We had 9 adults and 3 young kids. We split the check 3 ways. The guy , our server, was gracious enough to split it without hesitation. There’s a 20% split check gratuity. Understandably so. I told my family to treat him nice (tip) because we put him through the wringer with our split checks and all our needs.
The food was quality but it’s what I’d call typical American Mexican food. Not too special for being in the southwest.
There’s too many plates for me to name off here. I’ll try to add names to the pics that I upload. The family enjoyed it I think for the most part. The food took a bit to come out to our table. I assume it was because of the quantity we ordered.
For me, I ordered my usual chimichanga with Ground beef. Rice and beans. I asked for it to be fried extra crisp. It came out just as I asked. I wanted green hot sauce like Green pepper chalulla but they only had house made green Chile sauce.
All in all it was ok.
