Lovely place with an older diner vibe. Pancakes are absolutely amazing as well as the coffee. And it is great for people with night schedules because they serve breakfast lunch and dinner all day. Love it here!

Cafe 290 is a great change to our dining experience in the Taylor, TX area. From great breakfast selections to amazing entree choices, this restaurant has it all.

I believe the greatest quality this location possesses is the staff onsite. Marisol gave us an opportunity to overview the menu and came back with a much needed enthusiasm in the food service industry. Ken, the owner, came by to ask if anything additional was needed. Owners, like him, are what help a restaurant and staff to thrive, not only survive, in this face paced environment.

The chicken tenders were properly sauced and glazed. The chicken fried steak was cooked & spiced delightfully and was the home style meal it was intended to be. Their special (Chuck’s Deluxe) is a staple for their other site in Manor and is hoping to be one here with the Ducks.

Come through and enjoy some home style cooking with a twist, this side of 79!

I was told by many people at this Cafe was a good Cafe and had good chicken fried steaks I mean huge chicken fried steaks that is one reason why I went because I love chicken fried steaks and they said that this restaurant was Bill Beck in the World War II or something like that so that’s another thing I liked about it but when I received my order chicken fried with overcooked burnt on the ends mashed potato runny the cornbread sticky the only thing that was good about this food at my carrots were nice and hot can green beans nice and hot and I had a cold refreshment otherwise than this I would not return back manager could have said this meals on the house but didn’t say anything

What’s not to like at an informal packed Sunday brunch leaving Austin on the way to Houston! Great high test Java, eggs over easy just right, crispy hash browns or cheese grits, and a Texas sized homemade biscuit with ham slab or pan sausages.

Fair price for a well done traditional breakfast, servred by an efficient personable waitstaff and free wifi!

Put this one on ur “go to” list!

It’s a local diner and I loved my Sunday brunch. I had the Alto and my husband had the traditional. So delicious and satisfying. I will be returning.

Old time greasy spoon highway diner with great food. Place just needs some real cleaning not just superficial. I had a huge chicken fried steak that was very well seasoned and breaded, mashed potatoes and fried okra. Bobbie Lee had the highway 290 smothered chicken with rice and beans. He ate it with gusto but it looked like the afternoon heartburn attack. Which it did about an hour later. Service was excellent.

Once again, Cafe 290 made my day with a delicious and filling meal. I can’t ever leave without taking a slice of their homemade pie or cake home. When I’m in the area, even if I’m not hungry, I swing by to pick up pie or cake to go. Last weekend I was in Austin for a work event that ended very late in the evening. I was dead tired, skipped dinner and went straight to my hotel to sleep. The next morning I stopped by Cafe 290 to refuel before my hour long drive home. Not surprising for a Sunday morning to see the parking lot full. I was famished and knew the food would be worth a wait. Luckily, I got the last open parking spot available. When I walked in, as always, I was promptly greeted and seated. Almost every table was full so my luck continued with getting seated right away. While my server was very busy she was very attentive. I ordered a ‘build your own’ omelette with grits (I skipped the side of bread offered). In a matter of 10 minutes my meal was served. I normally add butter to my grits, not this time! They were absolutely perfect, best grits I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The omelette was stuffed with everything I asked for, they don’t skimp y’all! I normally have to ask for a to go box when I go out to eat, I left with a clean plate it was so delicious. I don’t recall my servers name but I’ve eaten here many times and all the servers are friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. My meal ended with another bit of luck, I got the last piece of key lime pie, my favorite. Thanks to all of the gals and guys who keep Cafe 290 running like a well oiled machine. This is my favorite diner, I promise I will be back soon 🙂

This spot is pure comfort and culture. You can feel the history the moment you walk in, and the food is straight-up home cooking done right. The plates are affordable, loaded, and so satisfying — from the delicious pancakes and waffles to the unreal slices of pie. Nothing fancy, just big portions, big flavor, and a place that feels like it’s been feeding the community with love for years. Absolute gem ☕️

Cabbage was sweet which was different it was good but I prefer non sweet cabbage. Mac and cheese was runny but good. Catfish was okay a little soggy definitely could have been fried hard and the tartar sauce taste like nothing but pickles. Was my first time trying not sure if I’ll try it again but everything was okay.
