Dad’s side of the family comes down to Holden Beach for the summer. Dad is 74 years old. I am 45. He has been eating here since he was a little boy. I’ve been eating here since I was a little girl. My daughter is 21. She’s been eating here since she was a little girl. Seafood Hut is a family tradition for us. We drove from the Triad to Jacksonville to see my Mom for a few days. We drove down to Calabash from Jacksonville just to eat here. The seafood is STILL that good! It was the best seafood we’ve had all year. I moved to the Triad 3 years ago from Jacksonville. Sorry, not sorry – they do NOT know how to cook fried seafood up in the Triad. We split a Deluxe meal. If you want fresh, fried ENC seafood THIS is where you go

Have been going to get seafood there for as long as I can remember. The same taste and atmosphere since I was a kid. No line and no wait today. Love this place. My go to is fried shrimp, cold slaw, fries and hush puppies.

This was our first time going here. After looking for something quick and wanting some seafood, we wandered upon the Calabash Seafood hut. From the time we walked in, until we left, the service was excellent. This is on the top of my list for fried seafood by far. Our server was very friendly, and we were looking for some recommendations. We told the server what we were looking for and recommended the seafood platter. We ended up ordering “The Original,” which consisted of shrimp, oysters, deviled crab, scallops, clam strips, and flouder. You also get coleslaw, French fries, and hushpuppies. All the food is lightly battered and fried. When the plate arrived, it was heaping with food. There was enough food for 3 to 4 people to share. Watching the other dishes come out, they are not shy of the serving sizes. Cocktail and tarter sauces were also very good. We will definitely make this a place to visit when we are here.

Wonderful place, used to come here as a child, many, many years ago. Was in the area for business and make a special trip just to eat here. Every bit as good as I remember, how often is that not the case? Please give these folks your business. Wonderfully light crispy fried seafood, I got the small platter, what a misnomer! Contained a small mountain of flounder, oysters and some of the best shrimp I’ve had in a long time. Linda took very good care of me, better than I deserved, made sure I had everything I needed and plenty of sweet tea! Please support your small businesses as we get used to this new normal. Also be good to your servers, they were hit especially hard the last few years. Trying to make a difference, One Day at a Time, Won’t You Join Me?

A nice cheaper seafood restaurant option in the area. Most of the food is very good, including the clam chowder, fish and shrimp and the sweet tea is probably the best I’ve ever had. I don’t recommend the scallops, as they are scallops of something, just not the scallops I was hoping for or used to. Ashley is a great server with an incredible personality and is an asset to this establishment.

We had the best experience! No wait, seat yourself. The server was so sweet and patient with us (dining with a toddler…) and the fried platter was heavenly. Every seafood item was fried to perfection and the slaw was perfect. The portions are huge so we took home plenty.

We had heard so many great things about Calabash Seafood Hut and were eager to finally give it a try. After our visit, we found the experience to be decidedly mixed. While the service was genuinely wonderful, the food unfortunately fell short of the reputation, leading to a 3-star rating for an experience that felt average overall.
Service and Atmosphere
The bright spot of our meal was definitely the friendly service. Our server was attentive, checking on our table several times, which always makes a difference.
The atmosphere, however, felt a bit like a time capsule. The décor, walls, and tables are quite outdated. It’s not necessarily a bad thing if you’re looking for a retro, no-frills seaside feel, but be prepared for a setting that definitely needs some refreshing. A small detail, but you wrap up your experience by paying at a small window near the entrance, which is an unusual touch.
The Food: A Series of Misses
The food was the main letdown. I ordered the clam strips and fries, and the clams were very inconsistent—some were pale yellow and seemingly undercooked, while others were overly browned. The breading was bland, and the mix of undercooked and overcooked textures made for a poor taste.
My wife’s experience with the coconut shrimp and fries was similar. She found the batter to be excessively sweet, with an unexpected hint of spice, perhaps even cinnamon. She didn’t enjoy the shrimp, suggesting the flavor profile was off-balance and confusing.
We also tried the hush puppies, which were spindle-shaped, dense, and had a consistency like an unsweetened cake. Served only with plain butter, they were heavy and didn’t seem properly prepared. It was our first time trying this style, but they were so dense and lacking in flavor that we couldn’t enjoy them.
Final Verdict
Ultimately, while the staff was fantastic, nothing about the meal itself—from the inconsistent clam strips to the confusingly spiced shrimp and heavy hush puppies—felt worth a second visit. Our initial high expectations were unmet, and we won’t be returning.

Wow… Just wow! We stumble on this place by accident. We intend to go to Captain Nance’s however they were closed for the Super Bowl. My grandma always told me everything happens for a reason and this was it! This small, diner styled seafood restaurant was amazing! I ordered a combo seafood plate and everything was SO fresh! The oysters literally melted in my mouth! The ladies running and working the place were true, southern bell sweethearts with kind souls! The waitress was consistent and never let my drink get lower than an inch. And don’t get me started on the taste of their tea… it has the perfect balance of water and sugar… just phenomenal. Too bad I live 3 hours away but I’ll definitely make this my go-to when visiting SB. Highly recommend!!

This was the worst food in Calabash. Almost as bad as Capt Nances seafood. This restaurant is walking distance from the port where fresh seafood is brought in daily and they insist on serving frozen seafood from an inland vender. The taste alone tells you it’s not fresh. Also the food was greasy. Could not eat this food.
