Founded in 1914 by Joseph Dager, four generations of Dagers have since run the company, which is located in Utica, Ohio on 25 acres of the perfect combination of wooded countryside and rolling, pastoral farmland. Still family-owned and operated, Velvet distributes more than five million gallons of ice cream every year from its headquarters on the grounds of Ye Olde Mill. Ye Olde Mill also houses an ice cream museum, gift shop, restaurant, playground, picnic area and catch-and-release fish pond.

We stopped to check out the mill and to take a break from driving. There is a nice museum with the history of Velvet Ice Cream. Nice grounds. You can’t stop and not get some ice cream. The sundays were a bit pricey but they make awesome ice cream. We will be checking out our local grocery to see if they stock Velvet.

Nestled in a picturesque park-like setting, Ye Olde Mill is a family-owned gem that offers a perfect blend of history, fun, and of course, incredible ice cream. Whether you’re seeking a memorable day trip or a sweet escape, this place is the perfect destination.

The moment you step inside Ye Olde Mill, you’re enveloped in charm. The restored 19th-century grist mill stands tall amidst 20 acres of rolling hills, ponds, and lush greenery. It’s like stepping back in time, where a peaceful and family-friendly vibe envelops you. The outdoor areas are a haven for relaxation and enjoyment. Picnic tables, a playground, and a catch-and-release fishing pond cater to both kids and adults alike.

But the real star of the show is Velvet Ice Cream. With over a century of crafting premium ice cream, they’ve earned a stellar reputation. I savored their signature Buckeye Classic, a heavenly fusion of peanut butter and chocolate. Rich, creamy, and utterly indulgent, it was a taste of pure bliss. The flavor variety is impressive, with over 40 options to choose from, including classic favorites like vanilla and chocolate, as well as unique seasonal creations.

Indecisive dessert lovers like me will rejoice at the inclusion of samples. Before you commit to a scoop, you can indulge in a taste of the magic.

The ice cream parlor inside the mill exudes a cozy and nostalgic charm, adding to the overall experience. And for those interested in the history of Velvet Ice Cream and the Dager family’s four-generation legacy, the small ice cream museum is a delightful bonus. It’s a fun way to learn about the past while enjoying a scoop of your favorite ice cream.

To complete your visit, the gift shop offers an array of ice cream-themed souvenirs, perfect for taking home and sharing with loved ones.
Velvet Ice Cream at Ye Olde Mill offers a delightful experience beyond just a sweet treat. The onsite restaurant serves a variety of lunch and dinner options. I savored their hearty and delectable Reuben sandwich, though I must admit that the food prices seemed a bit steep compared to the quality. Nevertheless, you’re truly paying for the overall experience, and in that regard, it’s an investment worth making. Just be sure to save room for dessert!

Families will find plenty of activities to keep their children entertained. Feeding the ducks at the pond and enjoying the playground are just a few options. However, I was disappointed to learn that the factory tours, which provide a behind-the-scenes look at the ice cream-making process, are only available on weekdays. Plan accordingly if this is a must-do for you. Additionally, Ye Olde Mill is a seasonal attraction, open from May to October, so ensure your visit aligns with these months.

A few practical tips: if you want to feed the ducks or utilize some of the smaller amenities, consider bringing cash. Visiting on a weekday can also help avoid the weekend crowds, especially during peak summer months or special events like the Utica Ice Cream Festival over Memorial Day weekend. The staff was friendly and helpful, but service in the restaurant can be slow during busy times, so patience is key.

Overall, Velvet Ice Cream at Ye Olde Mill is a quintessential Ohio experience that combines delicious ice cream with a charming, historic setting. It’s the kind of place that leaves you with a smile on your face and a craving for just one more scoop. I eagerly anticipate my next visit, perhaps trying the raspberry cordial or one of their seasonal sundaes. Highly recommended for families, couples, and anyone with a sweet tooth!

Absolute gem of an ice cream shop. A very historic and beautiful atmosphere. The shop also has its own candy and soda pop. Plenty of comfortable outdoor seating. Lots of nice areas for kids to run around and explore including an arcade, pond for fishing, and playground.

Historic ice cream shop in Utica! There are tons of ice cream flavors, even dairy free options! Nice displays of the history behind the company. Have a restraunt on site, we were there on a Sunday, and they had live music on the patio outside. Nice property with a small pond, pavilions and a playground!

Once you taste Velvet Ice Cream no other ice cream will compare. It is rich and creamy, and comes in a multitude of flavors. So many in the display cases that it takes a long time to decide on the flavor for that visit. You can do like my brother and get two dips, one each of two different flavors. And, it’s not complete without being served in a waffle cone or bowl.

Besides the ice cream, there is food, for a well-balanced dining experience. And candy! And souvenirs! Lots of options in the restaurant/ice cream parlor/gift shop.

In another section of the building is the museum, which tells the story of ice cream making and the history of Velvet and Ye Olde Mill.

Outside are tables and restrooms. More buildings, trails, stream and water wheel to explore. Ducks to feed. Places for memorable photos. And, lots of nature to enjoy.

I have been to Velvet several times and it never disappoints.

Some of the staff were not as warm and welcoming on this particular visit, but it just could have been that he was having a bad day. Hopefully, he can resolve his issues and bring a smiling face to customers in the future. It sure won’t stop me from returning.

Came here in 2018. Had a hamburger for a meal, but I can’t remember the name of it. The 2018 dessert I had was probably a Cookie bowl with substituted icecream.

July 31, 2024 update: Today I had the Three Cheese Pannini. For Dessert I will have the Buckeye Brownie.

Hanna was our waiter and was absolute awesome.  Even the whole staff here is friendly too.

Velvet Ice Cream is a hidden gem in Central Ohio. Plan to visit the venue in Summer and enjoy a delicious ice cream. They also have a modest menu if you want to eat something. Is a wonderful kid-friendly historical place to walk around, relax, and make new memories. Recommended.

We tried to go to ice cream festival on Memorial Day weekend after spending the day sightseeing in Coshocton. We arrived 30 minutes before closing and the only parking available was $10. We kept driving. I had been to the festival years ago and don’t remember a parking fee. We visited several weeks later that’s not a festival day and was able to enjoy ice cream on the patio. Ice cream was delicious. There is a playground area for the kids. Parking was free.
