Anyone who knows me, knows that I am the type of man to give credit where credit is due. In order for me to make a complaint with the wait staff or management the food/service has to be very lacking. To say the the food at Casa De Veracruz is lacking is an understatement. Me and my wife both arrived right before 4pm (the end time of lunch specials). We both ordered the lunch special chicken enchiladas with double rice instead of the rice and beans combo. My wife got the chicken with cheese sauce and I asked, and was told that they had sour cream “sauce” for their chicken enchiladas. First off, the portion size was absolutely minuscule, even for the 5.99 lunch special pricing. After watching the “chef” microwave both our meals from our seats in the dining room, we were greeted with two of the smallest tortillas one can find, filled with an equally tiny amount of shredded chicken with a tiny amount of red pepper seasoning. The amount of meat in both enchiladas combined could be pulled from one moderately sized fried chicken leg. There was no cheese or other such vegetables or spices inside to be found. On top of my wife’s enchiladas was the same luke warm queso cheese that tasted like it came out of a jar or can, and had already congealed a film-like layer on top by the time it arrived. My sour cream sauce enchiladas looked to be nothing more that the previously sparse enchiladas covered in a thin layer of regular cold sour cream that had been warmed in the microwave. On top of this cream “sauce” the smallest pinch of shredded cheddar cheese, which looked only to serve as a garnish and nothing more. The rice was very mushy, bland and even topped with the queso cheese was only little more than edible. It seems likely that the rice and all other enchilada “fixens” had been made earlier in the week and just reheated in the microwave prior to being served. Out of pure hunger I ate about half of the already undersized portion of rice and one of the tiny, poor excuses for an enchilada. I could not force myself to finish this lazy attempt at Mexican dining. The owner overheard me mention my displeasure and asked me what the problem was. I described to him my problems with the portion sizes, bland, and luke warm food. He then got frustrated and said that the food looked good and that’s how they do it there. I mentioned the cream sauce and he confirmed that it was mostly regular cold sour cream mixed with their bland, grainy queso. Our meal of two 5.99 enchilada specials, one iced tea and one water was 17 dollars and change. I about lost it. I found out they also charged an extra 1.25 for the few extra tortillas my wife asked for and they must have charged for the queso as well. After telling him I would pay it, but I didn’t think it was anywhere near worth that much, and would not be back, he took off five dollars. Then the chef came out of the back, and both the chef and owner began telling me how they serve great food, that we are the problem. They said no one has ever complained and were both very rude and hateful in their tone and words. I then asked the owner if he has eaten what I ordered and if he likes it. He said it looks good and he likes it. I asked him what he would rate his own food and he said five stars. I may not know a lot of things in this life, but believe me when I say I know what good food is. This was most certainly not it. I paid the still overpriced 12.00 for our meal and told him my comparison to another local Mexican restaurant with similar pricing and menus. As soon as they received my payment, the chef started angrily waving his arms, pointing and telling us to leave. He kept repeating just go and don’t come back, stating that they have other customers. During our visit there were only three other diners in the massive dining area. The owner also accused me of just trying to scam them and get a free meal out of the deal. I have never had such a bad experience, nor been so offended in a restaurant in all my life. People of Meeker, stay away, this is most certainly not how grandma made it!
