Faro opened his first pizza shop in 1978 and by 1987 had seven more. After selling the franchise in 1990 and a short time in Sicily, the family returned to Grand Rapids. In 1996, he opened Uccello’s Ristorante Pizzeria & Sports Lounge on East Beltline, which has grown to six locations known for great food, welcoming hospitality, and the ability to host large parties, from family gatherings to team celebrations. In 2016, Uccello’s Hospitality Group launched Herb & Fire Pizzeria in Grandville, later adding a second at Knapp & East Beltline. Today, UHG has eight locations, guided by Faro’s philosophy: “Always strive to give your guest more than they would normally expect… and never compromise on top quality.”

Visited with our family on a slow Sunday afternoon and brought our extended family (10 people total). We’ve been to this Uccello’s many times over the years (quite literally customers since it was built) but now tend to go infrequently, maybe once or twice every 3-6 months. This time around was rough.
-The service was good, and the server checked back regularly to take care of our group.
-The food was the rough spot. We ordered 2 batches of “pizza puffs”, which is just deep fried and seasoned chunks of pizza dough. Not kidding or being sarcastic. They’re a pretty simple appetizer and usually well liked. The first basket was inedible, because 75% of it was straight up raw dough. As in, uncooked raw bread dough, flash fried in deep fryer oil, seasoned and haphazardly thrown into a basket.
-We had our kids with us, and they were hungry so we were all a little frustrated right out of the gate because the appetizer was inedible. Notified server politely and she said “oh no,…I’m sorry, I’ll get another batch ordered right away”. She replaced the raw first order with a cooked one.
-While the other adults and a couple kids were going through the second ordered basket, we still found a handful of raw dough pieces, so we didn’t bother finishing them and proceeded to order mains.
-Food arrived, and overall it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t necessarily good either. Everything was just kinda thrown together.
-My sandwich (pictured) was supposed to be a toasted turkey/bacon/Swiss. I took a picture of it exactly as it was delivered to the table from the kitchen because the total lack of effort was laughably ridiculous. The $3 “upgrade” for “U-fries” was a handful of burnt steak fries thrown on the side of a sandwich basket. The sandwich was made with the ingredients IN THE WRONG DIRECTION OF THE BREAD , they were just kinda thrown across the middle of the bread (picture a plus sign, but as a sandwich). The tomatoes were past due and had that mushy/granular texture, pile of lettuce was just kind of thrown on.
-I paid $16 (just for the sandwich and the fries, not including drink, taxes, and gratuity) to remake my own sandwich with lackluster ingredients (I did eventually find 2-3 shredded slices of deli turkey under the salad and some melted cheese). The bacon was clearly an after thought because it was just thrown across with the rest.
-I wish I had taken a picture of the raw dough “pizza puffs” before they were sent back. The image would’ve alleviated the typing.
-I ended up still paying for both the pizza puffs (both orders, despite the fact that we were served a raw batch) and the toasted plus sign sandwich (that I still had to remake myself to be edible because I was exhausted and hungry and didnt feel like force feeding myself a sandwich salad, as I ordered a sandwich).
-I asked (politely/light heartedly) if there was a new line cook in training in the kitchen because it would at least make sense and afford some degree of grace, if not the opportunity to remake some of the items up to basic standards of presentation and food quality. The server did mention there was someone new they hadn’t worked with before, but otherwise wasn’t sure (and that’s OK, the food wasn’t her fault).
The pricing notwithstanding (sort of understandable with the state of the economy), the last couple visits have been just…”OK”, this most recent visit has me wondering if maybe we’ll try again in another few months, but we’re in no rush to go back. That’s a bit of a bummer because we used to really like Uccello’s.
We came to Uccello’s during a very busy time, and our waitress Zaida H was absolutely amazing. Even though they were slammed, she never complained and kept moving nonstop — checking on everyone, making sure we had everything we needed, and keeping such a positive attitude. Service like that truly makes a difference. We’ll definitely be back!
