In 1915, the Tucson Citizen reported that local developer John Murphey had purchased several thousand acres of property in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains to the north of town. The editors of the newspaper projected the purchase as folly”, an investment in worthless desert hillsides, never to be recovered. For John Murphey, it took just over a decade to prove his detractors wrong. By the end of the 1920s, homes were being built in the Catalina Foothills neighborhoods, and the distinctive Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival style buildings in the area began to take form. A short distance east of Campbell Avenue a building was built in 1926, possibly the first restaurant/cafe/tavern east of Oracle Road.

El Corral has always been a longtime favorite of mine. It’s always fun at the bar with Patrick, and servers like Jason and Carol make the dining room experience great as well. Great prime rib, tamale pie, and even Adobe mud pie for dessert. The atmosphere really embodies what Tucson was originally all about. Great place.

My family and I love this place. The atmosphere is why we go. You’re treated like family by the waitresses who are wonderful. We sat hear the cooking station where we could see each piece of entree being cooked on a special pit. My T-bone was cooked to perfection and came with salad, bread and a choice of a side.

Just went here last week while out in Arizona. The tbone that I got had an odd taste to it. I was expecting that it would have been cooked over a fire but looked and tasted like it was pan fried, which I don’t really like. It was cooked really nicely tho, a perfect medium rare. My husband had the filet mignon and loved it. My father in law had the prime rib and also said it had an odd taste to it, must be the seasoning they use. Very nice staff, and we didn’t even need a reservation. Overall, I gave it 4 stars. Give it a try, you may love the seasoning they use!! Cool cowboy vibes too!

Lisa W. is a great server. She is very pleasant and very informative of the menu. My wife and I both had the traditional (El Corral) cut Prime Rib…so kudos to the kitchen staff. Melts in your mouth delicious! Highly recommend this spot if you are looking for traditional Tucson western dining. Great and varied appetizers, entrees, side dishes, and dessert options! We plan to take our parents the next time they visit us. Oh and they offer a military discount!

It was our first time, a family dinner to celebrate Valentine’s Day we had 3 prime rib and our son had a grilled prime rib with the bone. all medium rare. The menu does not indicate approximate weight of the steak only the price was $$$$$$. we were a little disappointed with a very small portions. We were not one time tourists we live here and we were dressed smart casual for the occasion. a little disappointed on the quality of beef and weight portions. our bill was $180 20%tip included. oh well ?
