We stopped in for a beer and to share some sushi. After we ordered, the server told me they’d “come back so we can put in an order for some real food.” That sums up the experience: persistent upselling and interruptions.
They have a lot of staff clearing dishes, topping water, and circling back to see what else they can sell you. It felt intrusive rather than attentive. Maybe the service style stood out even more because I just returned from Europe, where service is the opposite—you can sit and chat with the person you are dining with, and not be interrupted. It’s the opposite, you have to wave them down if you want something. Both approaches have pros and cons, but Dave’s service style is definitely too much on the pushy side.
The sushi here remains outstanding. Some of the best in the US.
……………
Celiac friendly! Gluten free options. Menu clearly identifies which food items contain gluten.
If I could give this restaurant 6 stars I would!
Some of the best sushi I have ever had in the US! Service was excellent with an amazing atmosphere to match!
A must when in Bozeman!
The sushi is the obvious draw, they have all the regular rolls you’d expect plus some really fun alternatives to the norm. For example, the John Wayne is served with steak on top. They even have some secret menu items. The appetizers and noodle dishes are also excellent. The calamari is my favorite. I just wish they would bring back the sushi tacos! They have a good beer list as well. Prices are fair, but expect to pay a bit more than other sushi places because the quality rocks.
Now, let’s talk about the star of the show – the sushi. At Dave’s Sushi, they truly know how to craft delectable rolls that not only satisfy your cravings but also leave you wanting more. The quality and freshness of the seafood were top-notch, and each bite was a burst of flavor. The sushi chefs showcased their expertise in every detail, from the perfect rice texture to the meticulous presentation. It was evident that they take pride in their craft.
To accompany my sushi, I decided to try their sake, and I was not disappointed. Their selection of sake was extensive, and I was impressed with the depth and complexity of flavors. The staff was knowledgeable about the different options available and helped me find the perfect match for my meal.
Overall, I highly recommend Dave’s Sushi to anyone looking for an exceptional sushi dining experience. The friendly staff, combined with the outstanding quality of their sushi and sake, make this restaurant a must-visit. Whether you’re a sushi enthusiast or a newcomer to Japanese cuisine, you’ll surely find something to love at Dave’s Sushi.
Our server, Matthew, gave us ample time to absorb the menu while making a few recommendations with drink pairings. Ultimately, we decided on the Spicy Scallop Nigiri and Quail Egg on Roe Nigiri as apps, the Christmas Showers speciality roll, the Veggie Maki, and the Mackerel sashimi for entrees.
Service at the sushi bar took over and the coworkers there were a mix between jumping in to check on us when needed and having a good time behind the bar. There was a late lunch rush around 2:30pm, but Matthew was totally on top of it- with ease.
We were impressed by the quality of the raw Mackerel in a landlocked state.
I saw the previous review where a guest felt the service here was too pushy with upselling and that they were constantly disturbed, but this was not our experience at all.
*Mid-2000s vibe interior, slight ski town feel, just off Main Street, vast menu.
*Come for something in Bozeman that’s not fried food, stay for Matthew.
