Today, I visited Thalaivas, which offers Kongunadu specials along with a variety of Indian dishes. We started with their chukku mallli coffee, which was excellent, exceeded expectations, and felt truly authentic. Overall, the food had good flavor, but the seasoning was inconsistent.
• Poori Masala: The pooris were large, but the strong taste of reheated oil overshadowed the usual flavor, and the masala was quite salty.
• Onion Rava Masala Dosa: The dosa itself was delicious, but the masala was again overly salty. The raw tomato–chilli chutney had a slightly bitter aftertaste.
• Garlic Naan & Mushroom Gravy: The naan was soft and garlicky, very well made. However, the mushroom gravy was extremely salty and difficult to finish. The manager noticed something was off and graciously offered a less-salty gravy to go, which I appreciated. Later, the owner explained that some days the food had less salt and he asked the chef to make it more “punchy,” but the response felt a bit defensive. We came in hoping for a good experience on a holiday evening, and the excessive saltiness did affect that.Overall, the restaurant has great potential, a lovely ambiance, and some authentic flavors. I hope they focus on controlling salt levels and improving consistency, especially for the price point. I’d be happy to return and see improvements next time.
The ambience is beautiful and thoughtfully designed with a traditional touch that immediately sets the tone. The space feels warm, inviting, and elegant, with gorgeous plates and charming bells placed around the restaurant that add a unique character to the dining experience. It is one of those places that makes you slow down, enjoy the atmosphere, and already think about your next visit.
Our server Akash was exceptional. Attentive, friendly, and genuinely welcoming, he made sure everything came out perfectly and helped make the experience even more memorable.
We ordered the restaurant special and I went with the Veg Thali, which was absolutely packed with flavor. Every dish had its own personality, but the porotta was straight fire. Perfectly flaky, buttery, and fresh.
We also had the Paneer Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken, both rich, comforting, and beautifully spiced. You can really taste the authenticity and care that goes into the cooking here.
And then the desserts were incredible.
The Shahi Tukda completely stole the show. This decadent Mughlai dessert, whose name literally means Royal Piece, dates back to the 1600s. It is made with bread fried in ghee until golden and crisp, soaked in fragrant cardamom and saffron syrup, and topped with thick, sweet rabri. The combination of crunchy, syrupy, and creamy textures was absolutely unforgettable.
The Gulab Jamun was just as satisfying. Soft, warm, and melt in your mouth delicious.
Between the beautiful traditional ambience, stunning presentation, incredible flavors, and outstanding service— Thalaiva’s Indian Kitchen is a place I would highly recommend.
If you are craving authentic South Indian flavors in a gorgeous, welcoming setting, this spot should absolutely be on your list.
We had the Kongunadu lamb curry, the flavor was unexpected for something cooked with cocunut and the meat was a bit chewy, so I wont recommned it. We also tried their special biryani, which featured two types of rice with fried chicken underneath. The portion size was good; I really enjoyed the rice, though I wasn’t quite sure about the fried chicken. The highlight for me was the chicken pepper fry, it was fantastic, especially if you enjoy bold black pepper flavor and a bit of heat. We also had the Chicken both Parotta which was tasted. However, for $17.99 you will get only 4 small pieces of chicekn. I would go back but not going to risk and try new dishes 😀
