We had a good time at this restaurant, the Afghan dumplings were amazing. The chicken and the lamb shank were also really good. The sampler platter with falafel was delicious. Maybe the flavor of the food could be a little bit better.

Me and my bf came here. Nice atmosphere!! The food was soo delicious. We had the Baloni with beef & onion and potato. We shared the Kofta dish which was pretty good. For dessert we tried their Sheer Yakh and it was very, very delicious! I love vanilla ice cream so it was perfect for me, and there was a hint of rose flavor in it, which was so refreshing!! I wish It had more pistachios, but that’s just me personally bc I loved it so much. The service was pretty good and quick. I would come back.

From the moment you walk in, you immediately feel the positive and authentic atmosphere of this family-owned Afghan restaurant—warmly decorated with traditional touches and complemented by a genuinely welcoming team.
The menu begins with the restaurant’s story, which sets the tone beautifully, and continues with an excellent selection of classic Afghan dishes. The variety is impressive: a balanced combination of flavorful starters, vegetarian options, entrées, and a wide range of beautifully prepared meat dishes and kabobs that offer something for every taste.
The Bolani was wonderfully seasoned, the lamb shank was cooked to perfection—tender, rich, and served in a deeply flavorful sauce. The lamb chops were delicious, and the Gabuli Palow paired with the lamb shank was outstanding. For dessert, the sheer berenj was comforting and very well made, and finishing everything with sheer chay (milk and black tea) was the perfect warm touch after the meal.
Ali agha was very hospitable and kind enough to offer great recommendations, which made our experience even better.
Overall, an excellent dining experience that blends hospitality, authenticity, and great flavor.
Considering all factors, I believe this is the best Afghan restaurant in the DMV area , and anyone looking for authentic cuisine—especially those who enjoy Mediterranean-style dishes—will absolutely love trying it.

Easily one of the best restaurants I have been to in DC! I had been wanting to go here for ages and finally had the opportunity to come here for dinner with my family. From the moment you step through the door, you are greeted with kindness and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The drinks and food were all absolutely incredible: The cocktails were creative, and the pumpkin bolani was to die for. We also had the aushak dumplings, potato onion bolani, morgh qorma, cauliflower, lamb chops, qabuli pulow, pistachio ricotta cake, and chocolate cake. Every dish was perfection! A little on the pricey side but completely worth it in my opinion!

The dumplings are absolutely delicious. Definitely not to be missed. We also tried the Afghan salad & the national dish! The cacao dessert was also divine. I would go back again just for that. The service was good, but we ordered a dessert that never arrived and when we asked for our leftovers to be boxed, they never came back out. Overall though, a good experience & truly delicious food.

Lamb Tikka 3/5: the lamb itself was not tender and the flavor was just okay. My girlfriend said it perfectly it tasted like something we could whip up at home. The portion size was good. But I had no left overs and was still a bit hungry. So the value for $30 was not there for me personally.
Loved the atmosphere and the candles. The space was tight a little more than I prefer upstairs. But overall good atmosphere.

So good! Warm and charming atmosphere. Stellar food. Excellent service. Pure delight. One vegetarian, one gluten free person, and we easily found a set of plates we were excited to share. The food exceeded hopes. Beautifully seasoned. What a delight!!! Well done, team Lapis.

A downtown conference felt stifling and I needed to recharge my introvert batteries, so I headed for a walk up Columbia Road. I stumbled upon Lapis and am glad I found it to rekindle a love for Afghan cuisine that began with a long ago colleague’s office potluck contributions. Service was friendly, dining room vibes were classy/chill, the menu was cheeky, and food was terrific. I started with a yummy pomegranate juice and then had bolani, the delicious Afghan flatbread. I chose one with pumpkin and the other with onion and potato. The mint yogurt and chutney for dipping completed the hearty appetizer. For my main, I went with the awesome aushak dumplings with leeks, split peas, beef, garlic, and sour cream. Completely delicious and a portion that filled me up for the downhill walk back to the conference. A Rumi quote at the host stand alongside a friendly boast about the amazing dumplings were both spot on. I will definitely return to Lapis on future DC visits.

Definitely one of the best restaurants I ate at during my trip to DC! The food was up to par with other major city food scenes. Our waiter was awesome, knew the dishes and what to recommend, plus was attentive to my sister’s peanut allergy, so he knew what to recommend and what dishes could be modified. I’ve never had Afghan food and it was delicious and I would go again! The dumplings are a must order and the pumpkin from the vegetable sides was one of my favorite things we ordered and I didn’t expect it to be such a favorite of mine! The menu is made to be more of a shared type of experience (which was better because you could try everything). 5/5 in my book and makes sense how they have a Michelin award!! We walked in right at around 5 pm and got a 2 person table easily, but as the evening went on more and more people came and by 7 a resy would definitely be needed!

The food was just okay and service was just fine as well. The lamb shank was probably the only dish our party enjoyed of all the dishes we ordered. The mixed grill was overcooked abs under salted. The naan side portion size was pitiful (and they accidentally charged us for two portions, we didn’t see the bill until after). The bolani and the morgh korma were edible, not much more to say there. DC has much better restaurants and I do not understand the hype.
