Our time at The Grey is amazing. Before coming here we watched the Chefs Table episode and I excitedly read the book. My wife was equally excited. Mashama’s food comes through as advertised. Uniquely southern but with a modern take. The atmosphere is romantic, nostalgic, and evocative. We had oysters to start that were magnificent – perfectly shocked and a mix of local, semi local, and from Massachusetts. Our middles we ordered the Cornbread Dressing and the Fired Squash. Dressing was perfectly balanced. Squash was great but lacked a little balance. Should have been WAY more habanero syrup. I feel that dish should have been sweet with cheese and squash. The breading over powered everything. We asked for more syrup and ended up LOVING the dish. For our main we got the Lamb. To say this was the best dish of the night would be an understatement. This was the best lamb dish I have ever had. One of the best protein dishes I have ever had dining out in general. Truly unforgettable. For dessert the Sweet Potato Olive Oil Cake was satisfying and a great finish. They also brought us a Chess Pie that I liked even better. Salty and butterscotch-ey. Wonderful.

What really sealed the night was the service. Ryan was incredible and so fun to spend our time with. He was welcoming, professional, jovial, and so so helpful. We can’t wait to come back again.

We came here for an upscale anniversary dinner and we were not disappointed. The service was perfect and they were very thoughtful and wrote a happy anniversary note. The staff were helpful and answered many of our questions. They also had many vegetarian options to pick from. It’s a coursed $85 meal and I felt given the amount of food we got, it was very reasonable.

The Savannah Red Rice was so good. It was definitely a great take on local food and was very flavorful and filling. I loved all the different vegetables in it – they were perfectly cooked and enhanced the sauce base. For the main, they had an okra and beans dish with bread. It also came with some salad and the salad was really fresh and had a very crispy dressing. The whole entree with its different parts went together so well. The beans were not too soft or hard but the perfect in-between.

Highly recommend!! After reading about this place, and the prices, we came in with very high expectations and walked out very satisfied. A wonderful server Katherine kept things light and happy and engaged. Both her and our bartender were so knowledgeable and engaging about what we were eating and drinking. Unfortunately, I can’t remember exactly what we ate on the $85 dinner menu (a couple of months ago!) but I know it was fantastic. The Parker rolls outstanding. Never had them before and now I’ll have to be chained to a fire hydrant outside so I don’t keep running back in and eating more. Cocktails were perfect and the selection was wonderful. Just a really great, great dinner. Thank you! Our best memory among many from this wonderful city.

Came twice in the same day to eat in the diner side with my family, hands down one of our favorite diner experiences! Couldn’t get a reservation for the tasting but absolutely loved the diner for lunch and dinner! The deserts are decadent and the potatoes memorable oddly enough. Loved all the entrees! Service absolutely top notch!

I love the look and ambiance of this spot. Amazing interior design, gorgeous bar and excellent service. The food//menu was extremely disappointing. Not many options so we felt stuck. With such limited options I wasn’t excited about ordering chicken but hoped for the best and what a let down. It was slimy and way too smoky. To mess up chicken takes skill. The cornbread was phenomenal and my espresso martini was divine.

One of our favorite spots in Savannah. The food is always creative and tasty. Everything we had was delicious, but there was a couple of standout dishes. The first was the leek and potato soup. It was smoky, buttery, just a hint of leeks – just fantastic. The second start of the night was the tartare. The seasoning was on point and the green tomatoes added a great acidic pop. The crackers served with it we’re also fantastic but the seasoning overpowered the flavor of the beef.

The only “bad” part of the evening was the wine service. Our waitress knew nothing at all about the wines on the list and told us the som wasn’t there that night and there wasn’t anybody else that could help. I don’t expect someone to work every night of the week, but for the price being asked for the meal, there should be at least one other person on staff who could tell us about the wines. Eventually our waitress brought over another waitress who “knew a little bit more about wine” and she did help us find a bottle, but it was a bit jarring.

The restaurant is set in a building with a lot of history, and its story is aligned with the changes in Savannah over a long period of time (e.g., former Jim Crow era bus station, a former bakery).

The food was the best culinary experience we had during our entire stay in Savannah. It was one of the few places that lived up to all the hype surrounding Savannah gastronomy. The menu for brunch is small, so they’re not trying to do too much, just a few things really well.

We had the duck pastrami, the omelette, the fried chicken with hoecakes, and the Bloody Mary. All great. They had live music playing, and the kitchen staff clearly took pride in all of their work and presentation of the food.

There’s no question that The Grey has built a reputation in Savannah for its striking setting, a restored 1938 Greyhound bus terminal turned into a stylish dining space that blends Art Deco charm with Southern elegance. Unfortunately, on my recent visit, the beauty of the space far outshined the overall dining experience.

I arrived early and took a seat at the bar, where the experience started off on the right note. The bartenders were friendly, the cocktails were well-balanced, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and inviting. My wife and I enjoyed our drinks and looked forward to what we hoped would be an exceptional meal.

Once we were called to our table, however, the evening took a noticeable turn. We were seated at a cramped table wedged between others, close enough to hear every word of the neighboring conversations. It wasn’t a busy night, so the tight seating felt unnecessary. When we asked to be moved, the maître d’ (or possibly the manager) told us it would be a 45-minute wait, even though several open tables were visible. After a short back-and-forth, he “found” a table, one that, interestingly, remained empty around us for the entire hour and a half we were there.

Then came the surprise: The Grey offers only a prix fixe menu. While that can work beautifully when executed with creativity and depth, the limited choices here fell flat.

For the first course, I ordered the B&B Pickled Egg, which lacked any memorable flavor or texture. My wife’s Summer Crudité was equally uninspired. The second course offered a slight improvement, my wife’s Baba Ghanoush was flavorful and well-balanced but my Beef Carpaccio missed the mark. The edges were brown and looked partially cooked, with none of the delicate freshness that defines a great carpaccio.

For the main course, we both opted for the Dayboat Catch, which happened to be grouper. It looked promising but delivered little in the way of taste. My wife took one bite and set her fork down, describing it as “completely flavorless.” I finished mine, but mostly out of obligation rather than enjoyment.

The one true highlight of the evening was our server. She was warm, attentive, and genuinely empathetic. Without us asking, she comped my wife’s dessert and later removed her entrée from the bill, gestures that showed professionalism and care. Her service was the saving grace of the meal.

In the end, The Grey is worth visiting for its history and design, the space itself is stunning, a perfect tribute to Savannah’s past. But as for the food, it failed to live up to the restaurant’s reputation. What began as a promising evening with well-made cocktails turned into a forgettable dinner that leaned too heavily on ambiance and not enough on flavor.

Final verdict: Go for the architecture and the bar experience, but temper your expectations when it comes to the food.

Hadn’t been to The Grey in awhile as we had felt like it had lost its way a bit in the last year or so. But we decided to give it another try and so happy that The Grey is back and in top form. Had dinner there this week and the service by Joel and others was top notch and the food was creative and delicious. Started with the hoe cakes and caviar – simple but so tasty. Tried the pot licker scallops which were just great, the fried squash which had a delicious habanero syrup (so good) and the roasted oysters which were seasoned perfectly. We split the lamb roti and it was fantastic -flaky homemade roti, smoky vegetables and perfectly cooked lamb chops and shoulder. Finished with the buttermilk chess pie which was amazing. Great experience from start to finish.

We finally got a table on our 4th visit to Savannah in 2 years. It’s now my favorite spot — the beautiful Art Deco restoration of a blacks-only bus terminal, the creative and well executed food, and the opinionated artistic touches.
