Situated on the former site of the Versailles Diner, the owner Nick has followed in his father’s footsteps and expanded the family business, West Essex Diner, located on Route 46 East in Fairfield, where my partner and I decided to pay them a visit today.
Upon arrival as first-timers, this upscale establishment was fully energized by the music as a local favorite waited for their names to be called for a table from the host, who I knew from a different diner.
Within 30 minutes, we managed to get a table by the window at one of the two dining rooms, evoking an airy, bright, and casual vibe.
Their menu has everything one can imagine. There were pages of breakfast options and different lunch and dinner options.
We decided on the California Benedict and Meat Gyro open platter, accompanied by a small cup of Cream of Turkey and a large Greek salad. I must have been hungry and forgot to take pictures. . The food was exceptionally tasty. It was busy for a Sunday but not stressed; there were lots of staff, and things moved along efficiently. Our server, Sergio, was friendly and accommodating. The price was comparable to the area, and the portions were healthy.

Ordered takeout, just burgers and one was a turkey burger, which was not hot and tasted funny-like freezer burn or something. Waffle fries were chewy and tough, they went into the trash too. Called the establishment to report it and was told “to come tomorrow and they would be happy to give me a new turkey burger.” I asked for a refund and said I would return the one I received tonight and was refused a credit, again offered “a turkey burger tomorrow.” This is the last time we order from them, they just lost a customer. This place does not seem to stand behind the quality of their food. Be very wary about eating here, in my opinion the quality of their food is declining dramatically! Don’t waste your money and effort like I did tonight.

My girlfriends and I planned a late lunch at West Essex Diner to catch up over a nice meal, and we thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, food, and service. From the parking lot which was sufficiently large, you can already hear the low hum of music and chatter, and once you walk in it’s that comforting NJ diner vibe done right. Picture shiny booths, buzzing energy, families and friend groups.
The host George greeted us and we were sat in the brighter section of the dining area by the windows. We started with soup since I always get soup at a diner and I went with the soup of the day which was cream of turkey. Very good flavor and went down really well. Then we went a little crazy since the menu is massive!
We ordered a Benedict, Gyro platter, Fried seafood combo, sliders, onion rings, pancakes which were so fluffy, and drinks. Portions (especially the gyro) were generous so we had to take some home. The seafood tasted fresh. Their farm eggs are exquisite. Everything felt planned with care and was presented well not just food slapped on a plate.
This diner knows how to operate smoothly, clearly why they have been in business so long. Kitchen game is strong, lots of recurring customers that the waiters joke with, all in all really good vibes. I would not hesitate to recommend West Essex Diner to anyone looking for a classic NJ diner experience! Thank you for serving us.

So I come to this place very often as I think this is probs a good place to get in and out of for a quick place to get something to eat. I am giving 3 stars is because every time you go in there and if your whole party is not present, they will not seat you until the whole party is there. Which I think it is kind of ridiculous. I know why they do it. They do it because they don’t want to hold up a table or the kitchen but still. Also just know how the managers and the hostesses treat you about it is awful. Very nasty attitudes for management and hostess staff. They need better managers and the hostess staff. Servers and the busboys are very nice though!

Our server Sergio was friendly and great.
We both got an omelette and it was good. Prefer my eggs a little less dry but nothing a little salt, pepper and ketchup can’t fix. So overall passed this place on the way to work all the time and finally stopped there for breakfast. It was worth the trip. Good spot to grab a meal nearby.

No wait to get seated, had the best service from our waiter George. Super friendly, you can tell he had been doing this for awhile. Food was super flavorful, left us thinking about it all night. Can’t say enough about our waiter and how good the food was. Amazing atmosphere and experience

Great experience. Came around 9am on a Sunday and we were seated right away. The server was fast and attentive. I ordered Eggs Benedict with home fries well done and my husband had the Grand Slam. It was probably one of the best eggs Benedict I’ve had. My husban enjoyed his meal as well. The portions were huge and we were really happy with everything. Definitely arrive on the earlier end- it filled up quite fast by the time we were leaving. Would definitely come back!

The food is excellent. They have an amazing selection. One of the best from any diner I’ve ever been to. Everything is exceptionally tasty. Service is great. The only downside I could find is that the entire party needs to be there before they will seat you… But it makes total sense. Easily five stars
