Vincent DePhilippis: Born in New York, NY, raised in Naples, Italy returned to NYC at the age of 18. Vincent DePhilippis and Madeleine Manfredi from Nimes, France met in New York, NY. Mamma and Papa married in 1925, and settled in Westchester, PA. Some time after, they moved to San Diego in 1947, where they opened an Italian market called Cash & Carry Italian Foods on India St in Little Italy. 1950 was the beginning of what has become a very successful line of family restaurants that are known today as Filippi’s Pizza Grottos which are owned and operated by original family members of the founders. The DePhilippis family would like to welcome you and your family to visit our restaurants to enjoy our traditional old Italian family recipes.

My husband and I had a medium pizza; the crust was tasty, it had plenty of cheese, and it was quite large for a medium size. We shared cheese ravioli, which were generously filled with a huge meatball and marinara sauce. The portions are large, the quality of the ingredients is average, the atmosphere is relaxed, and there’s a great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The service was quick.

Stopped here for lunch while in town on business. The exterior of the building is inviting. The second I walked in, the aroma of the food confirmed that I was going to enjoy the food. The atmosphere is great and I was greeted and seated by a kind gentleman. My waitress, Ellen, was very friendly and she stopped by frequently to see if I needed anything . I ordered the Caesar salad with authentic dressing and enjoyed a personal size pizza with pepperoni and anchovies on the side. The dressing was generous. After enjoying my meal, I was amazed with the very reasonable cost. This is a must visit restaurant.

Since the two of us usually don’t eat big portions, we ordered a medium pizza and a small Caesar salad for dinner, but even that was more than we could finish. The pizza was thicker and more filling than I expected, but it was delicious. Salad was a little salty for us. It was the first day of the long weekend, and our waiter looked very busy, but he still checked on us often and took great care of us.

Filippis is a great place for an Italian meal. My favorite is their lasagna, a close second would be the meatball sub. This location was fairly quiet for a late Monday afternoon so our large group received quick and polite service. Full disclosure, the pizza was just okay, and Ive had much better at other Filippis locations. There is plenty of parking, but the spaces are a tad narrow. I did not have lasagna this time, so I guess that means I’ll have to visit again. Enjoy!

I regretted ordering the lasagna as soon as I said it. Why didn’t I just get pizza or something not as easy to mess up? It came and looked delicious. I said I couldn’t possibly eat the whole thing. I blacked out along the way and vaguely recall using the bread in the background to shovel leftover sauce in my face. Dessert? Why yes, I AM eating my feelings today. Server recommended spumoni and again when it came I said I couldn’t possibly, but I’m no quitter. No regrets. This place is dangerous.

For the second time, we were highly disappointed in the food at this Kearney Mesa location. About a week later we went to the Mira Mesa location and had a much, much better experience. We used to go to the Kearney Mesa spot all the time, but have found that for the past year or so it has greatly declined in the taste and quality of the food. Our friends and family have expressed the same disappointment at this one location. We won’t be returning until we hear they have drastically improved. There are two other locations we go to that serve much better, the one in Mira Mesa and the Little Italy location.

My family was visiting from Arizona. We came across this place and absolutely loved it. The wings are AMAZING!! Pizza and lasagna are a great choice. Antony was our waiter and he made our experience that much better. Never had to ask for refills, napkins or ranch. He was on top of it. He was so helpful, talkative, respectful, down to earth and an amazing waiter! Definitely recommend this place!

But this location has a habit of treating the customer picking up food as a hassle to their routine.
Went 8 minutes at the counter tonight before receiving any eye contact or acknowledgement. I don’t need to walk in and expect my order to be placed on the counter–just a little human warmth while working through the orders, that’s all.

Wandering in Paradise
Ordered takeout online from Filippi’s website and was very convenient to pick up 30 minutes later. We got a large white pizza and the calamari and both were tasty. The service was very nice and the pick up was smooth. Nice interior to the restaurant with holiday decorations. Recommend if you’re looking for Italian food!
