We ordered the soy garlic ribs (very tender), Mac and cheese (garlicky, oily, flavorless rigatoni), the spicy broccolini (can’t mess that up), and general tso shrimp (huge shrimps but very salty and saucy.) The sauce didn’t taste home made at all. Sadly we did pick through the food, wasn’t hot, and left without trying any drinks or desserts. The bill was $108, with a 20% gratuity included. The staff was friendly but there was no dazzle to the experience but to get to the next table. I will not be returning but I do wish the restaurant the best.
We originally had reservations for Huncho House, but when I arrived there was a letter on the window saying they’re currently renovating & temporarily operating out of 1123 … literally a less than 2-minute walk across the street on the same block. I do wish they would’ve mentioned that during the confirmation call since they were great about checking in the day of.
I was SO excited to finally try this spot, but found out they only serve brunch on Sundays with a limited menu. I was a little disappointed since we were celebrating a friend’s birthday but the drink menu is definitely not limited lol.
I arrived early and was seated quickly. It’s a smaller, intimate space with a bar area and a real fireplace. The huge Black queen painting on the wall is stunning. Very well decorated, clean, and cozy.
SMASHED CRESCENT AVOCADO TOAST
Topped with a poached egg, lettuce, and shaved parmesan, it was okay. I wish it had fresh smashed avocado slices, and I’m personally not a fan of poached eggs. I did like the semi-Caesar inspired salad element on the croissant, though the concept is there, just needs a little tweaking to perfect it.
KOREAN SEAFOOD OMELETTE
(Eggs, crab, shrimp, red peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, and crab cream sauce)
This was very different than expected in the best way. Crispy edges, unique texture, and so flavorful. I’ve never had an omelette like this before. It was filling on its own and I’m so glad I chose it.
SUYA POTATO HASH
Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, perfectly cubed, and full of flavor. Exactly how breakfast potatoes should be.
Blueberry Lemonade
Sweet with the perfect balance, I really enjoyed this.
For the birthday friend, they brought out strawberry cheesecake ice cream with smoke effects and a sparkler. Such a cool presentation and it really elevated the experience. The ice cream was so good, honestly I wish we had ordered more! 🙂
Even though the menu was small, the portions and flavors were surprisingly big. Small menu, huge outcome.
Our waitress was a beautiful-spirited lady with the prettiest smile. Great service, greater energy.
There is a 20% service fee automatically added (pretty common around the DMV now). You’re not obligated to tip extra, but since service was great, I added more. ⭐️
Overall, still a great experience despite the initial surprise. I can’t wait to return once Huncho House reopens so I can finally try their full dinner menu. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things, I’ll be patiently waiting.
We ordered three sides which were definitely enough to share for a table of 4, general tso shrimp which were huge, whole branzino, and the scallops with crab risotto. Everything was so good, the risotto was full of flavor and the Brussel sprouts were some of the best I’ve ever had. The only thing we were disappointed in was the Caesars salad- too plain.
From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a small glass of champagne, the same thoughtful welcome gesture Huncho House is known for. It’s such a classy touch that sets the tone for a fantastic dining experience.
The menu is packed with tempting options, so we decided to share several appetizers to try a little of everything. The unexpected standout was the house salad — yes, the salad! It was so good we had a whole conversation about it. The mix of roasted tomatoes, charred corn, banana peppers, spring mix, and cilantro lime vinaigrette created a burst of bright, layered flavor.
We also tried the spiced broccolini, black garlic soy sticky ribs with tender, fall-off-the-bone meat, crispy cauliflower, Wagyu cheesesteak egg rolls, and bang bang shrimp tacos on wonton shells. Every dish was seasoned perfectly and packed with flavor.
The ambience was stylish but comfortable, with great music and friendly service. The dining room feels intimate, and the energy is just right for a night out.
We were celebrating my birthday, so we ended with a passionfruit yuzu gelato. It was refreshing and light, though not particularly memorable compared to the rest of the meal.
I’ll definitely be back to try more, especially the deviled eggs, snow crab pasta, and scallops with crab risotto.
If you love restaurants where flavor, creativity, and atmosphere come together beautifully, make a reservation at 1123 by Chef Tobias.
My husband and I planned a date night here, but the experience quickly went downhill due to the service. We ordered the fries with crab as an appetizer. They were decent, but for a place with such high prices, I expected a more impressive presentation and flavor. I also ordered a lychee martini only to be told they were out of the lychee fruit, which was disappointing. My husband ordered a Coke, and we later discovered we were charged for all three refills, something I’ve never encountered for fountain soda, especially considering we waited over an hour for our main courses.
For our entrées, he ordered the crab fried rice with salmon, and I chose the fried lobster jollof. What should have been an exciting meal turned into an extremely long wait. About 45–50 minutes into waiting, still with no food, a manager finally came by to apologize, offering free alcoholic drinks and 20% off the bill. While the gesture was appreciated, it didn’t make up for the frustration, especially with entrées priced at $50+. We had been patient, but we watched tables around us get their food before us despite being told the kitchen was “a little backed up.” We waited about 1 hour and 15 minutes for our food. This is unacceptable.
When the food finally arrived, it was yet another letdown. My fried lobster was extremely salty, and while the jollof rice was flavorful, my husband’s crab fried rice was mushy. At this price point, the quality and service should be consistent, and they simply weren’t.
Overall, the ambience was lovely, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the poor service, long wait times, unexpected charges, and disappointing food. Sadly, I don’t think we’ll be returning.
I’m truly grateful to have enjoyed such a fantastic dinner and overall experience at 1123. I think very highly of Chef Tobias and pray he continues to succeed in all his endeavors. He is incredibly talented, and his food speaks volumes.
I made the reservation while attending a work conference, not realizing it fell on the anniversary of what must have been a very difficult day for Chef Tobias. It was inspiring to see him continue to push forward and create art through his food. I also appreciated getting the chance to speak with him for a few minutes—it meant the world to me.
If I could give out James Beard or Michelin stars, this restaurant and Chef Tobias would certainly receive them. I will absolutely be recommending this place for its food, ambiance, excellent service, and amazing vibes.
I was very satisfied with everything. Definitely 5/5.
