First tried this place years ago through a catered event, and the sushi quality back then was pretty underwhelming, so I never felt the need to return. Recently, while looking for a quick takeout option around Downtown Crossing, I decided to give it another shot.
As a rule of thumb, for spots that focus heavily on takeout and delivery, I stick to maki rolls rather than nigiri. This time, I ordered the Black Pearl Boy roll and the Crazy Tuna maki, and both were solid. Not on par with some of the more popular sushi spots, but fresh enough and well-balanced.
The vibe was also cozier than I expected. Booth seating and counter spots, with Ghibli music playing in the background, gave it a relaxed feel. If you’re looking for a casual sushi dinner downtown without high expectations, this works.
Admittedly, I haven’t been to Avana Sushi 1, but this second iteration probably has nothing to envy it. The food was fresh and the order came out quick. I ordered some Cali and salmon rolls, with seaweed salad and Gyoza, all neatly presented, for a solid lunch.
Service was great – they’re quick and attentive even when things get busy. Can recommend.
I happened to be there for dinner on a gloomy Friday night but in the turn of events, it changed to a mouthwatering one. When I, a vegetarian, could try a Maki Roll that would be equivalent to a Sushi. The was crispy and fresh.
This place deserves a special mention for the generous staff!
Highly recommended
There were a couple things that prevented me from giving 5 stars. My complaints are about the water and the spicy mayo. The water is terrible, they really need a filtration system or something, and I thought the spicy mayo was off, very thick and gelatinous.
I recommend coming in during the lunch special, 2 rolls and 2 sides are like $16-$17 and its definitely filling
Atmosphere: A cozy, colorful interior with enjoyable music, offering single seating along a long, bar-like table, and also booth seating. There’s also a fun table built into the front window nook to accommodate a larger group.
Service: Super quick and friendly service. Our order was taken promptly, and the appetizers were also delivered quickly, hot and fresh.
