This place has a lot of classic northern dishes, such as chả cá lã vọng, bún đậu mắm tôm, bánh giò, etc. I was originally here to try the bún thang, but unfortunately they don’t serve that anymore, nor do they serve egg coffee anymore!

The restaurant itself was very spacious and filled with Vietnamese lanterns. The shape of the restaurant itself looks like the “Shark Jaw” building that was previously in Hanoi. Service was good.

I got the nem cua bể (fresh spring rolls stuffed with crab meat, minced pork & fresh herbs) appetizer for $25 and coconut shake for $8. The nem cua bể was a bit pricy in my opinion, but they did put a lot of crab meat inside; the entire top layer of the filling was pure crab. I just think they could have put more pork in the mix with vermicelli, because I felt it was just crab with vermicelli at the bottom. The shell was really good, better than what I’ve had in other restaurants. And coconut shake is basically just coconut milk that’s diluted.

Tried one of their signature dishes, chả cá lã vọng for $30. Overall, it was good, but I did expect it to be better. I think the turmeric / seasoning could be stronger and the fermented shrimp sauce was a bit weak (maybe this was done so that it would suit foreign tastes more). I personally enjoy the one I’ve tried at B’s Kitchen in Vaughan, Ontario more.

The place is cute with the lanterns, service was warm. We ordered 2 phos – they were small (especially compared to their price), and from the soup base to beef quality, they were acceptable but nothing to write home about.

Absolutely amazing experience at Old Hanoi Quarter!
After 6 years of visiting their old location, I finally found them again at this new spot — and I’m so grateful for the reconnection. The food is just as incredible as I remembered — full of authentic Hanoi flavor, fresh ingredients, and perfect seasoning. The cocktails were creative, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. The service was equally outstanding — warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. It felt like rediscovering an old favorite all over again. Truly one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in years!
10 stars given if I could!

I love their steamed rice roll! It was soft and chewy, and had a perfect ratio of rice roll to ingredients. It was delicious! The salad on the side was also very refreshing. We also ordered a lemongrass chicken which turned out to be really well marinated, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I would come back again!

My wife and I had our lunch at this restaurant with our best friend in Vancouver. This was our first visit, and was certainly the best Vietnamese we had tried. In terms of quality, presentation and taste, it’s certainly the best Vietnamese cuisine we had tried so far. There were many great Vietnamese restaurants we tried in many cities during our stay in Canada in the past and Tokyo, Japan where we currently live, but having combination of high quality ingredients, nice presentation and great taste all in one, Hanoi Old Quarter is certainly top of the list. We will certainly revisit the next time we are in Vancouver.

I was so sad to hear that the Mr. Red Cafe shutdown because of the landlord. I didn’t realize that they continued their legacy just further down at Hanoi Old Quarter.
I have frequently visited old quarter on the Victoria drive location before and it is just absolutely delicious.

Many of us have been loyal and followed you through the years. You are a heavy weight contender for Northern Vietnamese cuisine. Definitely a winner in my heart.

I thought I’d post some pictures from humble beginnings. Thank you for your continued commitment to represent amazing Northern Vietnamese cuisine. You have contributed to many happy memories every time you serve a table.

The food overall is very good, and the service is excellent. However, I was a little disappointed with the pho. Other Vietnamese restaurants that specialize in pho does a better job. The “giant” pho I ordered was more like a typical regular-sized bowl. Don’t get me wrong, the portion of meat was generous, but the amount of noodles was quite small. That said, all the other dishes were great, and overall it was still a very enjoyable dining experience. I recommend to skip the pho and try more of their other dishes instead.

Top 3 Vietnamese in Vancouver. Crab and pork spring rolls are a must get. Everything was solid and tasty. Loved the homemade chilis and sauces. Refreshing attentive hospitality. We had BUD served our table and was excellent. We will be back and will tell our friends.

At some point, pickled garlic has become a must-have for me at a good Vietnamese restaurant. Although it was a pity that their signature cellophane noodle with dried eel were sold out this time, their regular beef pho was still quite good. Plus, their Vietnamese crepe was a nice addition. I think this restaurant is unique and definitely worth visiting again to try more of their dishes.

This is an excellent North Vietnamese restaurant owned by pioneer Mr. Red which had to close because of their land lord. The flavors and textures are multifaceted and they have some unique dishes like Vietnamese Carpacio, Soft Shelled crab and jellyfish salad. Had several other dishes because I was with a bunch of foodies. Really clean toilet also.
