Normally I don’t post negative comments as I am pretty easy to please in terms of eating out, but this was not a good experience. We were seated promptly, but were not handed menus, so we just sat and felt weird. It took a long time to get our water, and when we finally get our menus, the price of the items were very high. We thought maybe it would worth the price so we went ahead and ordered the 2 person meal, which included beef tenderloin, potato, vegetable, and salad. For $117 plus tax. We wanted our meat medium rare. When we received the food. Half of the meat was very overcooked and dry. The carrots and broccoli were just steamed and with no seasoning at all. The twice baked potatoes were good, and salad was average. With the price they charged, I was expecting the food to be cooked with skills and good flavors. This was very very disappointing for a high priced meal. I think reasonable prices for the meal would be half of what they charged.

Just like when dad brought me as a kid, everything was delicious and the service was wonderful. Our server, Armando, could not have been more polite and helpful.
We brought our daughter and she could not have been happier- they had a perfecly sized 4oz steak just for her, she says: best steak ever, I loved it so much the potato was cheesy and creamy and amazing highly suggest the twice backed potato best restaurant experience ever!

My first time there and what a great experience! The steak was really the best I have had in recent months (years?) in the St. Louis area. The service was fantastic – Demitra (sp?) did a great job as our server. The decor and atmosphere is tremendous – classy yet contemporary. We will definitely return!

Haven’t been here in many years. We arrived after a play (about 8:30pm) so only a few tables were filled. The food was GREAT as it was when we used to be regulars. My Steak by George was done just right as was my wife’s salmon. Our waiter was wonderful. He told us he had been there for 15 years having started as a busboy. The place really hadn’t changed much. It would have fit right in on the AMC series Mad Men.

George and his crew blew my wife and I away. I had meant to go here but finally took the plunge and I am so thankful we did. Definitely a 5 star experience! Steak and shrimp was great and our waitress was a real gem!

We were a party of 4… 2 of them got the halibut special… they said it was absolutely delicious… 1 of us got the strip steak and got the large filet mignon… the steaks were cooked perfectly, had a sauce over them which was good… I personally wish the steaks were seasoned with Something… I had to salt and pepper mine way more than usual.
The salads were delicious… had a honey mustard vinaigrette dressing…. surprisingly excellent!!!
Our Server Armando was beyond fabulous!!! So attentive… so very polite and very personable.. we all really loved him!! We enjoyed talking to him and learning all about his journey to the USA with his family!!
We hope to get you next time we dine with you all again.

Having lived in St. Louis for many years, I’d driven by the Charcoal House hundreds of times. But, never had the opportunity to eat there. My spouse surprised me by making a birthday reservation. The restaurant is a friendly throw back to a by gone era. Picture walking into a nice steakhouse from the late 60’s to early 70’s. It’s no frills, but very clean and well laid out. There’s a nice sized bar to enjoy a cocktail if you have to wait. The menu is straight forward, with a nice selection of fresh steaks and seafood. Wine and drinks were very generous pours. The special for the evening was rack of lamb with a rosemary sauce. It was excellent, cooked exactly right to medium rare. My spouse had the salmon. It was also cooked perfectly. Dee, our server, was phenomenal. She always had a smile, was pleasant and extremely attentive. You could tell she genuinely cared about our dining experience. I’ve read a few reviews complaining about how the menu pricing has risen. To those folks, I’d say get used to it. Covid changed everything. Dining out is not cheap anymore. Food and people costs have gone through the roof. I found the pricing to be very reasonable, considering the quality of the meal and the service. Family owned places like the Charcoal House are going by the wayside every day. It’s a great place just to sit at the bar, enjoy a cocktail or two with an appetizer if you’re on a tight budget. You won’t be disappointed.

I have not even eaten there and I can tell you I’m gonna give you a one star review based on the other reviews. Your tables are too close. Obviously your food is overpriced and you’re not ADA compliant. That’s a really big complaint.

My companion and I had an absolutely wonderful dining experience! We started with the escargot in mushroom caps which were absolute perfection. I had the beef tips with mushrooms and they were also cooked to perfection! My companion had a prime sirloin steak that was absolutely huge and he ate the whole thing because he said it was so good! We both had the twice baked potatoes which Charcoal House has always been famous for and they were delicious! The service was excellent, friendly and attentive. We both agreed that we had not had such a lovely dining experience in a long time.
