In 1981, our mother and family started “El Mexicali Cafe”. Since then, our homestyle Mexican cuisine and outstanding service have delighted all of our guests. A few years later, in 2006, our success and loyal customers inspired us to open a second restaurant, “El Mexicali Cafe 2”, on Monroe Street in Indio, California. Today, after 50 years and four generations, we are happy to carry on our mother’s heritage by using her “family recipes” which are well-known among locals and visitors as some of the greatest Mexican food in the Coachella Valley. Welcome to our newest restaurant, Carmen’s Restaurant, in Palm Desert, California!

I was quite surprised as this isn’t the typical decor of a Mexican restaurant. The surprise was how good the food was. I had the combination shredded beef taco and cheese enchilada. The taco shell was homemade, and combined with the shredded beef was very good. The enchilada had a great flavor and wasn’t drowned in sauce. The chips were hot and fresh, and the salsa was well blended and had a nice flavor. The restaurant was clean, and the service was exceptional.

Food was great. Reminded me of a classic family run Mexican restaurant. I went there while in town for business and it wasn’t very busy. Very friendly staff, but the food was the highlight; much better than average. Don’t go here on a diet. A lot of food for very reasonable prices. Salsa is always the first impression and it doesn’t disappoint.

Ordered the chili verdi wet burrito and it was fantastic. Also ordered a shredded beef tostada and taco. Been traveling the US and been missing California Mexican food.

We have visited Carmen’s numerous times, never disappointed. The food was always hot when served. The atmosphere and our service was top notch. If you’re looking for Mexican food, Carmen’s is the place. Whether visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner, I truly believe that you will not be disappointed. Did I mention drinks, they also have a bar, my wife had a margarita and she was impressed not only by the presentation but the taste. I had a strawberry drink and it was the best I have tasted. So stop by Carmen’s, you will not be disappointed.

Fish tacos are my goto meal and they really separate the best Mexican restaurants from the rest of the pack. Most restaurants just take the fish as is and bake or deep fry it, then rely on the toppings to add flavor. At worst, you end up with a greasy fishy smelling piece of white meat and at best, the fish is more or less flavorless. Not at Carmen’s: their fish is well seasoned, providing complex flavors at all levels of the taco. The fish is great, the toppings are great, and I would eat this meal every week if I lived near Carmen’s. This is outstanding Mexican food!

Very simple looking restaurant, they were really packed, but I was still checked on often. Ordered basic combo plate, two crunchy shredded beef tacos, beans and rice. It came out amazingly fast considering how busy they were. Food was delicious, rice is full of flavor, beans nice and creamy. Perfect amount of beef in the tacos and they were nice and crunchy. Everything went perfect with my margarita. I will be back to try more things!

EXCELLENT!!! Our dinner was so good that we went back the next morning for breakfast.
Family owned. Outstanding food and service was spot on. The birria tacos were fantastic. And the green chili pork and eggs were epic.
Highly recommend!

We had a great family meal at Carmen’s! It was our first time eating here, but we’ve been customers of El Mexicalli II for many years. We were warmly welcomed and seated immediately. Omar took great care of us. He made our guacamole tableside, which we haven’t had since before covid! The margaritas were on point and so was all the food. We had Fajitas, Carne asada tacos, Chiles Guéritos, Campechana, Caldo de Res soup. Tremendous!
