A Surprise Find with Fresh Seafood and Big Flavors
I found The Mandarin by accident while passing through Menlo Park — and it ended up being one of the best meals of my trip.
The spot prawn was incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked. You could tell it was live just moments before it hit the plate — sweet, juicy, and tender.
The highlight for me was the boiling fish — spicy, bold, and full of flavor. The fish was soft and delicate, served in a bubbling chili broth that packed just the right amount of heat.
Everything was made fresh to order, and it showed. No shortcuts, no reheating — just great ingredients and great cooking.
If you’re anywhere near the area, this place is absolutely worth a detour.

I’m a regular here and a big fan of the authentic cooking—the 青椒肉丝 (Shredded Pork with Green Pepper) is usually excellent. However, service fell short during my last visit.
We found a hair in our dish and pointed it out. While the kitchen replaced the dish and offered a free dessert, the manager declined our request for a discount on the affected item. At this price point ($40-$50 per person), I expected better accountability for a hygiene lapse than just a dessert. I hope management improves their recovery process, as I’d like to keep coming back for the food.

I love this place! This is one of my go-to spots to take Chinese friends or people coming into town who like Chinese food! It’s a nice fancy Chinese restaurant with really beautiful and tasty dishes. The dishes are on the pricier end ($20-$30) but they come out very beautiful and tasty so I would highly recommend.

This time we got Spicy Beef Tendon, Salt and Pepper Tofu, Garlic snow pea leaves, Eggplant in Spicy Sauce, and Kung Pao chicken. Everything was delicious. The beef tendon dish looked especially nice.

Service: We came on a Friday evening and there wasn’t too many people so we were seated right away. The dishes came out one by one in a timely manner. They also box the leftovers for you, which I appreciate. They do start tip at 20% which is a bummer but not unexpected for a pricy place like this.

Interior: The restaurant feels like a pretty fancy Chinese restaurant. There’s lots of tables so there’s plenty of seating. And there’s a lot of tables with turntables on top, so great for family style dining.

Parking: There’s parking the back, behind the restaurant. There’s also many parking lots in Menlo Park downtown, so it’s not hard to find a spot.

Good food and great service. We ordered the honey-walnut shrimp, kung-pao chicken, Dan-dan noodles and whole fish in spicy bean sauce. Every item was tasty and portion sizes were generous. The food would have been better with less oil/ salt/ sugar. The owner/ manager was very friendly, stopped by to say hello and gave my son a mango dessert on the house !

The decor is great, and the restaurant is clean and welcoming. Good experience !

Every friend I’ve taken here wants to come back. Excellent Szechuan dishes! This place is so good, a lot of China arrive in every day. My absolute favorites are cooked seafood, beef, or pork, but everything on the menu is wonderful. Among our friends, it is known as the House of Spicy Pain, and until you have ascended your endorphins you’ll never know the sweet nuanced fragrance of the Szechuan peppercorn. Skip the white people pages and go direct to the specialties.

First time here and it won’t be my last. This restaurant had great service with delicious, wonderfully presented Asian dishes. Vast selection of menu items. Beautiful upstairs and downstairs dining room. Great for small or large parties. Bar seating with an extensive collection of wines and some beer.
A little pricey, but that goes without saying if you’re located in Menlo Park /Palo Alto Bay Area.
Honestly, the food and service is worth the price though.

The servers go out of their way to assist. Constantly refilling our waters (orange infused). The servings are family portions so price is actually fair. They have tasty Yelping…Chicken. Green beans chicken (needed a little bit more salt but still very delicious) also love the dessert soup. The place looks clean and they clean the benches also. They have great alcohol choices as well. We will continue coming here for the excellent food and service!
