The restaurant is beautiful. The color scheme is great and matches well. The seating areas look nice too.
We went in with a party of three. When we arrived, it was just us and one other table. We were told we could sit wherever we liked. We had a toddler with us and were told we would be getting a high chair, but it was never brought out. Even though the server came to take our order, we still hadn’t received it. I had to get up and get the high chair myself.
We ordered several things off the menu:
Aguas de limonada – They are not the real deal. It was just fruit pulp mixed with lemonade and didn’t have enough ice. We asked for ice, but it took a while to receive it.
Caldo de pescado – It was very flavorful and delicious.
Charola – It came with shrimp cocktail (very flavorful), fried fish (good, but no tartar sauce), fried shrimp (not as flavorful), octopus rice (it was my first time having it and I loved it!), onion rings, and fries. Toward the end, the cook came out and asked if we needed anything else.
The place is clean and very well decorated—it definitely sets the scene—but the service could be better.

I loved that they have a very extensive menu for most of your cravings. My brother and I had the combo that includes a shrimp cocktail and fried fish. Everything was good, and the service was excellent! We were checked on multiple times by 3 employees.
The last time I went to Villa del Mar, it was located in a different plaza, and I was very impressed with how big and nice this new relocation is.

This place calls itself a “family restaurant,” yet doesn’t even have a basic changing table in the restroom. Our little one had an accident, and when we asked the waiter about a changing station, we were told they don’t have one. So I had to go outside to my vehicle to change my child. That’s unacceptable for any establishment claiming to cater to families.
Now let’s talk about the food — absolutely terrible. My mom’s plate came out cold. Not lukewarm. Cold. The burger I ordered was smaller than a McDouble off the value menu, yet priced like it was some premium, gourmet masterpiece. The portions are a joke, and the prices are ridiculous.
Overpriced. Overrated. Poor quality. Zero consideration for families.
We will never be coming back.

The restaurant inside is decorated beautifully! The servers were very friendly and attentive. I had the cóctel de camarón, and my husband had the tacos a la plancha, both delicious, and really enjoyed the jamaica as well! Can’t wait to be back in McAllen to dine here!
