Sat at the bar with a friend and the bartender was quick with our orders and had a great personality. The overall atmosphere was kind of dive-ish and the smokey smell emanating from the cigar room in the back didn’t help with that, but the place felt lived in and had a warm vibe.
So today a group of friends, I’ve had the pleasure of living life with for over forty years met at a place at Hilltop called Hackers….. we try to do this at least a couple of times a year….. everything was wonderful. It was actually one of the best venues we’ve had until the bill came.
They had told us that the room rental would be a certain price, never mentioned any additional gratuity or tax. So we collected the appropriate amount from all attendees to pay for the room…. We got the bill and then there was a very large “room” gratuity attached to it as well as a room tax.
And then they also added a 20% gratuity for each individual check. This also was never disclosed when the room was reserved (other than fine print on the menu that says large parties will have a 20% gratuity) …by the way, Not everyone ordered anything off the menu…so how would you know
Mind you, the waitress was fabulous and deserved every bit of the gratuity, thats not the point, its the point that it was never brought to anybody’s attention
I contacted the manager who contacted the owner (twice) who after both conversations then wanted to charge us an extra amount of money because we were a half hour beyond our initial time….we were there a half hour beyond our initial time because we were arguing about this bill….all I was asking this establishment’s owner was to waive just the $80 ($120 including the undisclosed tax) which he refused….
The establishment would have made 5 times this amount each time we revisited multiple times with our patronage and would have easily recovered their phantom charges…
Anyway….We were all very sad Because we will not be going back there and it was the perfect spot for us all to gather together at least two times a year ….good luck Hackers…and we all noticed that half of your establishment was empty today….you might want to think about the “why”…..
When I first arrived, the host told me there would be a 1 hour wait. She then goes to get one of her coworkers (bartender) who doubles down and says there would be a 2 hour wait. This didn’t seem right, mainly because there were not nearly enough people in the restaurant for there to be a 1 – 2 hour wait. So, at 7:15pm I stepped outside and checked online. Within 5 minutes, I was able to successfully make a reservation both online and over the phone for 7:30pm, well under the 2 hour wait time given upon arrival. This infuriated me as lying was unnecessary and made me feel as though my skin color and/or the fact I had a Groupon was the reason I was told there was a 2 hour wait in hopes that the wait time would deter me from staying to use the Groupon.
When I returned and informed the host, her attitude immediately changed. She became visibly irritated, avoided eye contact, and threw our menus onto the table instead of handing them to me. This behavior was extremely unprofessional. I was seated within 5 minutes of my return and told “so we don’t like really have any bays available the only reason it let you make a reservation is because this one is open”. Once seated in the room I was told “but it has been messing up so if it messes up I apologize”. This is probably the most polite / honest thing that’s came out of the hostess’s mouth all night.
The host sat me in bay 2, the bay that she claims was having operating issues. This infuriated me because I booked bay 3, the bay next door, and even walked past bay 3 to see, unsurprisingly, the bay was empty. It appeared that the host was doing everything in her power to enrage & provoke an unpleasant reaction from customers. I cannot help but think that she intentionally put me in a bay that she knew had a 50/50 chance of not working in order to have an “I told you so” moment instead of putting me in the bay I made a reservation for.
Given the circumstances, it felt like I was treated differently because of racial bias and/or the fact that I had a Groupon, which should never impact how guests are treated. After being confronted with the inconsistency, the host asked another employee to wait on me, which came across as embarrassment after being caught rather than an effort to correct the situation.
Our waitress, Ivory and the kitchen manager, came and was the restaurants SAVING GRACE. Her service was EXCEPTIONAL. She was timely, polite, understanding of my frustration, and went above and beyond to ensure the rest of the evening was amazing. Had it not been for Ivory and the kitchen manager (I cannot remember his name but he went above and beyond to ensure a pleasant experience for the rest of the evening) I would have done everything in my power to inform all patrons of the restaurant of what kind of discriminatory practices I felt were taking place before leaving and getting a refund for the Groupon I purchased.
Hospitality should be about respect and fairness. This experience was unacceptable, and I hope management addresses this seriously so other guests do not experience the same mistreatment.
I have video documentation of a small portion of our interaction with the host.
I’ve attached a picture of the 7:30pm reservation for Bay 3 along with the picture of the Hostess mentioned in the review.
