I stopped at Starbucks – 704 England St on Christmas Eve, expecting what should have been one of the easiest orders imaginable: a couple of iced coffees. Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated. Just coffee with ice so it wouldn’t be hot.
What followed was an absolute disaster.
There were only two employees working, which is already a failure on management’s part for Christmas Eve. The store was busy, the line kept growing, and instead of urgency or organization, the employees were moving slowly, chatting, and more focused on standing around and looking pretty than actually getting orders right.
At one point, instead of fixing the problem, one of them literally said something along the lines of “there’s only two of us, give us a break.”
Here’s the thing: that’s not the customer’s problem. If management knew what they were doing, they would have scheduled more than two people for a holiday rush instead of leaving customers stuck while employees use understaffing as an excuse to move slower and make mistakes.
When I finally received the drinks, they weren’t even iced. Hot coffee. After clearly ordering iced coffee. That’s not a small error—that’s the most basic part of the drink. If “iced” is missed, then no one is paying attention.
By that point, the line behind me was long, customers were visibly annoyed, and the entire operation was so disorganized that fixing the order wasn’t even realistic. People were waiting, confused, and clearly frustrated while the staff acted like none of it mattered.
In the end, the situation was so poorly handled that the entire order had to be canceled and refunded. On Christmas Eve. After waiting. After explaining. After watching employees waste time instead of focusing on customers.
This wasn’t just slow service—it was careless service combined with excuses. Mistakes happen, but the attitude here was the real problem. No real apology, no urgency, no accountability—just excuses and a refund.
Starbucks prices itself as a premium coffee shop, but this location delivers chaos, poor management, and employees who seem more interested in themselves than their jobs. If you’re understaffed, that’s on management. If you’re working a holiday, at least act professional and focus on customers instead of appearances.
Christmas Eve is stressful enough without dealing with a coffee shop that can’t get a basic order right and then asks customers to “give them a break.”
I won’t be back. Think twice before stopping here—especially during busy or holiday hours.
On top of that, the tea itself did not taste good. Overall, the order was messy, poorly handled, and not what I expect from a Starbucks location.
I would recommend visiting a different Starbucks location if you have the option. While the employees at this location are consistently friendly and polite, the service tends to be slow. The combination of being rushed to place an order and then waiting a long time for your drink can make the experience feel inefficient.
As locals, we find ourselves going to the new Dunkin’ more often because of the long lines, difficult walk-in access, and overall safety concerns at this Starbucks. With the new 7 Brews location opening across the street in the former Pizza Hut building, this Starbucks may lose even more regular customers. It seems clear that a redesign or reworking of the layout could help significantly. Multiple entry points and better access for cars and pedestrians could improve safety and make the experience much more manageable for everyone.
I ordered a hot Venti Chai Latte with whole milk and a shot of espresso. The lady that took my order and handed me the drink was very friendly.
But I don’t know what happened with this drink. It was the worst drink I have ever received from Starbucks. Unfortunately, I gave it 5-10 minutes to cool off before tasting it, and I wasn’t turning around to give them a second chance.
I didn’t think it was that complicated of an order. My best guess is they made it with water or skim milk, and only put in a small portion of the chai mix.
The only thing they got right was they included the shot of espresso. $7.73 for watered down espresso with a hint of chai.
Lesson learned. Always sample the drink before leaving.
