We ordered Gem Salad, Sugarkelpt Pita, Roasted Squash, and Pork Coppa. Overall, the food felt lazy and uninspired, especially given the prices.
The Gem Salad we ordered didn’t have any gem lettuce despite the name. It was romaine (which is fine; just call it a romaine salad). The apple garnish was all clumped together looked like it was hastily ran thru a mandolin and flung on top. The chef could have at least took the time and care to separate out the julienne pieces. Flavor was fine, but presentation just felt lazy.
Sugarkelp Pita was actually interesting. Pita was soft, yet with a nice chew. Kelp added a subtle umami and pleasantly oceanic flavor. Carrot shoo was also unique and interesting.
Squash dish was a bit under-seasoned, and otherwise blasé. But there is a twist – Romaine lettuce made a return in this dish! Inexplicably, this roasted squash and lentil dish included wilted, cooked romaine lettuce. Did the chef want to include braised Swiss chard and management said, “we’re too cheap for that, so use the romaine lettuce from the ‘gem’ salad instead”?? Chef, blink twice if you are held against your will…
Pork Coppa was okay. A bit on the dry side and also a bit under-seasoned, but otherwise not offensive. The sauce (maybe some kind of a pluot reduction) was tasty and paired nicely with the pork. Minor point – It was garnished with furikake. Not sure if this added anything to the dish and/or was necessary. I saw furikake on at least 4 of the 12 dishes on the menu. I guess the chef loves furikake on everything.
Service:
We arrived at the restaurant on a Sunday evening with a reservation. There were 2 other groups ahead of us, and no one even acknowledged our existence for at least 10 minutes (it sounded like the groups ahead of us waited even longer). Those groups eventually said they were able to get a table across the street at a different restaurant and left. We decided to stick it out and give Greenwood American Bistro a shot.
We were eventually seated. The waitstaff for the remainder of the evening was perfectly nice, but service was slow.
I understand restaurants are often understaffed and get slammed. And I understand service can be slow sometimes. Bu please, just acknowledge the crowd of people waiting at the door, and let them know that you’ll be right with them instead of ignoring them until they leave…
Atmosphere:
Overall atmosphere was pleasant. However, it feels like Greenwood American Bistro has a bit of an existential crisis. The atmosphere and the clientele skews more neighborhood/casual. The food tastes casual but is presented like a home cook trying too hard to plate/garnish like fine dining. And the menu is priced like high-end dining (e.g., please don’t put beverage and wine menus in sticky plastic sleeves like Applebees, unless you’re trying to be a neighborhood bar and grill – if so, the menu and pricing should reflect that).
Needless to say, I was disappointed by my experience. According to other reviews, lots of people seem to have had positive experiences. Maybe it was an off night.
Hands down, one of the best burgers and fries I’ve ever had, unique, incredible flavor and cooked perfectly.
The staff and atmosphere absolutely align with the quality of the food at an elevated, elegant bistro feel. Everyone was helpful and I ended up loving the cider they recommend.
This is my new go-to for amazing quality and seasonal menus with the freshest ingredients.
The rest of the lines: so many places in Seattle are astronomically priced yet don’t deliver when it comes to quality and quantity. Dining out feels like an investment now, so I’m careful about where the money is spent. I came to the Greenwood American Bistro on a friend’s recommendation, and it absolutely blew me away, checked all the boxes and then some. Just look at that cod dish – the presentation alone is Michelin quality! So hard to pick a favorite, but the Dungeness crab toast stood out as a perfectly balanced, beautifully plated meal. I feel like the meat of an entire crab was on that toast. And yes, that is a full-on bone in the background of the photo (steak tartare). I really couldn’t recommend this place enough for when you want a memorable, fancy meal at a fair price. I hope they stay in the neighborhood for years to come. It’s a pleasure to support a business with such high standards. (Oh, and the mocktails are actually good! Not just expensive juice!)
The menu had a nice mix of creative dishes. The sugar kelp pita was a standout — unique, fresh, and absolutely delicious. Everything we ordered was well-prepared and perfectly paced. Cocktails we ordered (Bella’s last word and a pisco del sol) were perfect.
We had mentioned ahead of time when making our reservation that we were celebrating my birthday, and the head chef surprised us with an off-menu dessert. It was a thoughtful touch that made the night extra special. We’ll definitely be back.
Immediately loved the ambiance and the staff were very friendly, not just in formal “this is my job” kind of way but genuinely friendly and welcoming.
We got the sugarkelp pita that comes with a DELICIOUS “shmoo”. They left it on the table after we finished the pita and I’m so glad they did because I kept eating it throughout the rest of the meal!
I got the poached cod and my partner got the braised lamb, both very yummy as well! The presentation was beautiful! The cod was light and the pea puree had a lot of flavor for it being pea puree. Probably the best pea dish I’ve ever had! I also got the salted caramel espresso martini and it was the best espresso martini I’ve ever had.
The staff were so kind and gave us a dessert on the house for my partner’s birthday. Chocolate mousse and homemade ice cream with some cherries and hazelnuts. It’s was a lovely way to end our meal.
Overall we both had a wonderful experience and would highly recommend. I’ve been to other restaurants that cost the same or more per person and have felt disappointed, but not this restaurant! The dishes at the GAB are worth the price. I’m eager to come back and try their brunch menu!
We stayed after the event for their happy hour (goes from 5-7!!) and tried their animal style fries, the burger, the glizzy, the gem salad, and the house popcorn. We all enjoyed our food, especially the fries and popcorn. I’m a big texture person and didn’t love the grittiness of the salad dressing with the goat cheese but still liked the taste and how crunchy the apple pieces were and the mustard seeds.
Overall we had a really fun experience, felt well taken care of by the friendly staff, and liked the ambiance of the place with the dried flower table settings and amazingly thin wine glasses!
