Really lovely sushi restaurant with high quality fish. There’s paid parking in a parking lot next to the restaurant and also a mix of free and paid street parking nearby. The interior space has counter seating for 6-8 people and a few tables for larger parties. Reservations aren’t required, but are recommended if you want to get a seat at the sushi bar.
They serve mainly teishoku sets and sushi – I pretty much just come here for the sushi. Service can be slow at times if you’re ordering raw fish since there’s usually just the owner doing the prep at the sushi counter.
The fish are all fresh and this place has some of the best akami zuke that I’ve ever had. Other highlights are, depending on the season, tachuo (belt fish, a white fish with a very clean taste and bouncy texture), shima-aji (striped jack, lovely texture and slightly sweet), and amaebi (sweet shrimp, sweet and nice mochi-like texture). The sushi is comparable to high-end omakase spots without breaking the bank.

Went for their sushi expecting premium quality. Was sadly disappointed. The fish was just okay in quality but sliced very thin especially the tuna. Rice was seasoned well, but biggest disappointment was in the poor quality of the nori wrap around their rolls. Nori was tough to bite and tear. In the salmon skin roll it was inside out so the nori made the roll fall apart as you tried to bite it and it wouldn’t tear. The last thing about the experience that made it bad was finding a short hair inside one of the roll pieces. Cannot comment on the other cooked food but would definitely not come back here for the sushi.

One of the best sushi restaurants ever! We got the chef sushi assortment, and every piece tasted amazing.
Also, make sure to get tonkatsu! It was so tender and moist inside but crispy outside.
Friendly staffs with great customer service.
Overall atmosphere felt very welcoming and clean. Would definitely be back!!

10/10!! Amazing sushi spot off the beaten path but well situated no matter where you are coming from. The place was busy but the staff made sure we were sat quickly (without a reservation) and talked us through the menu which had an option for everyone. The nigiri was some of the best I’ve ever had. Will shift plans to come back tomorrow!

Just great food….thats what Maguro-ya is. The tamago was fluffy like a pillow and probably the best we’ve had and we have eaten a lot of tamago. The chef special nigiri for $45 and 12 pieces was delicious. Every piece was flavourful and nothing had a fishy taste, including the mackerel. The tempura was meaty and crunchy, yet didn’t feel heavy. Left feeling very satisfied!

Super authentic Japanese food made by Japanese owner chef. I come here whenever I’m craving Japanese food. The atmosphere is so cozy and the price point is great.

Saturday date night sushi meal at Maguro-ya. Very fresh and delicious meal. Authentic Japanese food with an extensive menu from basics, teishoku, and speciality items to fully chef’s choice (omakaze). Really enjoyed the meal. Thank you Maguro-ya!

Nice little restaurant, food is tasty, with good menu selection. All the wait staff were wonderful, except for the older lady serving us. I don’t think she deliberately was trying to frustrate us, but wrong food orders, unbrought drinks, combining 2 different orders to one plate, and then serving it without saying anything (that person ate both and when other asked for their’s, she said it was on the others plate). Celebrating a birthday and we brought a cake, she total us it was $1.50 per person to eat, which we told her that was fine. She never gave us plates to place our cake servings on or a knife to cut, Just charged us 1.50 each.(party of 8). With a $400 + bill, you would expect more attention. Because of this only 4 stars.

The service was just okay, but the food was a big letdown. The sashimi didn’t taste fresh, one roll had a weird flavor, and the tempura was cold. Worst of all, I ended up sick with diarrhea that night. Really disappointing for a sushi spot. I would not recommend coming here if you’re picky about sushi quality.
