Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.

When we walked in, we were greeted by no one. There wasn’t a single staff member visible anywhere in the restaurant. No one at the counter, no one in the lobby, and no one that I could see in the kitchen.
Every single table was filthy, with food, ketchup, and trash left behind. Literally every table. My wife, who normally isn’t too bothered by that kind of thing, was grossed out. She needed to use the restroom, so I took one more quick look around before heading back to the van with our baby. Even if we had found a clean table, we would not have stayed. If the lobby looked like that, I cannot imagine what the kitchen looked like. It did not appear that anything had been cleaned all day, and we arrived around 3:30 to 4:00 p.m., so it was not right after a dinner rush.
A family that arrived just before us had apparently already ordered and were filling their cups as we walked in. They found a spot in the corner of the lobby. On my way out, I made eye contact with the mother, and she gave me a “yeah, I know” look.
The sign on the door encouraged customers to leave a Google review, so here it is. We will not be back.
I hadn’t been to a Steak n’ Shake since January 2018. They still had a wait staff then.
I entered the restaurant and was introduced to kiosk only ordering. The kiosk was easy to use and had multiple to use. They had one designated for cash as well. My biggest complaint was why they were asking for a tip, when there is no service? You order from a kiosk and pickup your order from the pickup station. You also must take care of your own trash.
The dining room was spotless, but they neglected to fill up either ketchup dispensers. I observed several customers attempting to get ketchup, but were unsuccessful. I’m unsure why there was a scanner at the drink station. It didn’t do anything.
The food took a little while to prepare. When it came out, my bread was a little blonde. I could here a manager asking why the bread looked like that. She should’ve taken it from the employee to correct the issue. She just let it go. It turns out that they used too much butter, as it was extremely greasy for bread. The fries were hot and delicious, even though they would be better with ketchup. The Frisco Melt would have been great if they didn’t use so much butter as mentioned before.
I used to love Steak n’ Shake, but will have to pass on this location. I would be willing to seek out another location, if one exists.
2 sides of honey mustard
2 sides of frisco sauce
1 large sprite
Lettuce on 2 burgers
Tomato on 2 burgers
Onions on 2 burgers
Xtra cheese on 2 burgers
There was defiantly some drama going on as there was 5 employees plus manager inside the window and then no employees inside window so I’m not sure what was going on but got home and was disappointed in what we ordered and paid for versus what we had. And I added a picture of our large fries … spent $40 on this plus a chicken tender meal and milkshake to which we didn’t get any ranch for.
This is a kind of out of the way Steak N Shake, next to Lowe’s.
No employees to ask questions, you order by touch screen and pay with a card. If the options you want are not encoded on the screen, you are SOL.
Every funnier, the screen asks if you want to leave the computer a 25% tip. Lol, you can’t make this stuff up.
Shake – still the best fast food shake, but they are starting to change the formula and fill it with foam. I suspect that in another year or so, it will be all foam like McDonald’s.
Steak Burgers – still good. Thin patties, with nice seasoning.
Fries – shoestring fries, totally crispy. Simply the best.
Looks like those great salads are gone now.
Besides the shake, all the other food here is still great.
Recommended, but with reservations.
You can only order at the kiosk. It’s gigantic, blinding, and full if a million pop ups. You have to scan a QR code for the drink machine to work, a tiny little sign explains it so for a few minutes I thought the machine was just broken. There wasn’t the drink size cup I paid for stocked. Normally I wouldn’t care that much, but the whole vibe irritated me that I didn’t want to be overcharged. Hard to find someone for the cup, who then tried to get me to just get a small by just.. giving me a small cup. Employees are so lifeless, it’s sad. I wanted to add something to my order that I had forgotten but could not be bothered to go back to the kiosk. Constant advertisement for bitcoin which was extremely depressing. Food wasn’t good, I could’ve just made myself a frozen burger at home. My friend’s order was wrong. I usually am the most patient and sympathetic with food service, but at that moment, I felt like I could’ve become a middle aged entitled boomer asking for a refund. Couldn’t though, it’s all digital, and I wont bring myself to that. So I can only hope this place shuts down or goes back to being a normal restaurant.
