El Chingon opened in March 2017 at 560 Fifth Ave., bringing “Bad Ass Mexican” to San Diego’s bustling Gaslamp Quarter. Designed to capture the spirit of Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa, and his pistoleros, El Chingon serves traditional Mexican food with elevated ingredients, paired with cerveza and an expansive beverage menu with a specialty in agave-based cocktails.
Lively, two-story destination for Mexican eats and cocktails with tequila and mezcal.

I got the birria tacos, and I was honestly impressed that they were as bland as they were. Shrimp tacos were better, but still nothing groundbreaking. The margs were what you could expect from happy hour, very sweet mix and not particularly strong.
Service was very average. They checked on us when needed but weren’t particularly attentive or chatty, which some might prefer. We found out that El Chingon is a night club as well, and figured that the servers mostly make their money as club staff and are making some extra money during mealtimes.
I think the venue is probably better as a bar than a restaurant. Nothing was wrong really, but I’m definitely more likely to come back for a night out than dinner.
Definitely if you stay at San Diego you have to go there for’a drink at least.
The ambiance is awesome. The DJ is doing super well, the waiters/waitress are fun and joyful
El Chingon – Downtown San Diego
The Bartender Mariana was an absolute all-star: she was quick, polite, professional, and super hospitable. The security team was friendly and welcoming, which really set the tone for the night. It was an awesome Sunday celebrating the Chargers victory over the Steelers — tons of Chargers fans here, and everyone vibed like we’d known each other for years.
The DJ killed it with a perfect mix of Latin music and hip hop. I even got a quick chat in with the manager — really cool guy. Overall, great energy, great crowd, and top-tier service. Definitely one of the best spots downtown!
Now, let’s talk food. I only had the empanadas, but they were amazing. Perfectly crisp, flavorful, and well worth the visit just for those alone. My coworker enjoyed her meal too, and the portion size was huge.
The real highlight? The drinks. Big shout out to the bartender for mixing a proper drink—no watered-down bull here.
All in all, it’s not a bad spot to hang out. If you’re looking for good food, a lively atmosphere, and a solid drink, I’d definitely recommend giving it a try.
