Our city tour included a lunch at Scratchleys which lunch was surprisingly good. The lamb shoulder was so tender that it was something we did not expect. The pasta was filled with really fresh prawns that I could not have enough of! The quality of the food there were really good. I would recommend Scratchleys!
The restaurant was situated on the wharf where we could see big ships and there would be tuckboats pulling the big ships into the port. That was an amazing sight! First time being so close to such a huge tanker ship! It was incredibly close! We were seated at the outdoor seating area thus the chance to catch the big ships.

Food was very very good with the majority of the staff were really great and cheerful. A bit overpriced in my eyes but we thought we’d try it anyway and see. We had the seafood platter for 2 which I thought was just lacking something.the daughter had the steak surf and turf but the surf part was crap and not to any of our liking. My son ordered the crab linguine and he really enjoyed it. Would I go back well maybe for a very special occasion but not for just a dinner

Sold seafood with great view of Newcastle port. Staff were friendly and attentive. Place was very open with great views. Food were high-quality and excellent. Ordered their oysters and Balmain bug. Oysters were fresh. Balmain bugs were perfectly cooked and tender. The sauce perfectly complemented the bugs. Also their desserts were great.

Scratchley’s is always wonderful. You just can’t beat the venue over the water watching the busy port and the food is sensational. The service is so good that Charlotte remembered us from last time which was months ago , maybe even the same birthday lunch last year! Staff are attentive and fun and you can sense there’s a good vibe for them as employees. Don’t think twice about going. You won’t be disappointed.

Last night we went to Scratchleys for my birthday dinner. From the moment we walked in the service was on point. We were greeted by Jackson and Jed. Jed’s service and his explanation of the menu, from food through to the cocktails was sensational! The team were attentive to our table, every meal was fresh, tasty and presented beautifully. It was the most perfect evening weather wise and we sat near the window (highly recommend booking early and requesting a window seat as if there is no wind the lovely team open up the whole window and you get a few open view of the harbour). The team lit my cake for me and came over to the table and due to the wind even shut the large window as my candles kept blowing out. A huge shout out to Ben as he kept re lightning my candles over and over! The service that my son, my Husband and I received from Jed, Ben and Jackson can not be faulted. We will be back and can’t wait.

Great place for seafood, right on the water. You can watch ferries and cargo ships coming and going. Lots of excellent gluten free choices, including an amazing pavlova dessert.

Scratchleys on the Wharf delivered excellent food with incredibly fresh fish. I had the seafood chowder as a starter, and grilled mahi mahi — those meals are outstanding. I last visited around 12 years ago, and the quality remains consistently high. While the prices aren’t the cheapest, the food is definitely worth it.

We dined here for Valentine’s Day and were really looking forward to a special evening, particularly given the venue’s reputation for fine dining in Newcastle and its beautiful location. While the view was absolutely stunning and remains a real highlight, we did leave feeling somewhat disappointed with the overall experience.
For such a romantic occasion, we expected a little more atmosphere or effort to reflect Valentine’s Day, but there didn’t seem to be anything that made the evening feel particularly special. Small touches would have gone a long way in enhancing the experience.
We were also surprised that the water served was unfiltered tap water. In a venue positioned as fine dining, we would have expected filtered water as standard. When we asked staff, we were told it wasn’t filtered.
There was also a mix-up with our bread, which we needed to sort out ourselves. The food itself had real potential and the flavours were promising; however, both of our meals were unfortunately overly salty — and that’s coming from someone who enjoys well-seasoned food. It was to the point where we couldn’t finish our meals. We mentioned this to two separate staff members, but there was no follow-up during the evening.
That said, the location and view are genuinely lovely, and that would be the main reason we would consider returning. We hope with a little more attention to detail and customer follow-up, the overall experience could truly match the setting.
