If you haven’t gotten the chance to try Sweet T’s Southern Eatery you are missing out. I would say this restaurant is pretty valid. I definitely threw down. The catfish and grits were pretty good especially if you like cheesy grits. Surprisedly I liked the devil eggs and I’m not a devil eggs person at all but they were actually pretty good. The Sweet T’s Fried Shrimp with their tartar sauce was also delicious and I enjoyed that. My mother got the Sweet T’s 1Lb Texas Braised Beef Short Rib but she wasn’t a big fan of it. I think it was a bit too much meat for her. So if you aren’t a big meat eater I would say stay away from that because it is a big piece of meat. Overall the portions are fair and filling. The service was awesome and we loved the ambiance and they played some fire music. When it comes to the bill gratuity is already included so keep that in mind.

Title: WE WOULD NOT RETURN

We planned a dinner on Wednesday night at 7:30pm via Resy to celebrate the end of our women’s Book Club, and we were very excited. The four of us entered the restaurant happily, but we were immediately met by a greeter who was not friendly or welcoming. She didn’t welcome us just asked where we wanted to sit. We asked if we could sit by the window and join the chairs and she said NO! This was disappointing from the start and the place was close to empty.

After being seated, we were left to navigate the iPad menu on our own. No waiter came over to introduce themselves or explain the daily specials. After waiting patiently for what seemed like 7 minutes, we had asked the greeter about the menu and she sighed and said she didn’t know and that she would go to call a waiter over.

He came and over but never welcomed us or asked what we wanted to drink but when asked informed us that some of the menu items shown on the iPad were not available at the Montclair location but only at another location.

When we asked what specials were available, he mentioned an eight dollar mocktail special but had to check if there were any other specials.

The first ten minutes were not a great experience, and we were hesitant about continuing.

We ordered appetizers, (that were FREE with the purchase of a $8 mocktail) which arrived within about 15 minutes. Unfortunately, the only item we enjoyed was the biscuits and gravy, which were very good, but the drinks were flavorful.

The eggs were underseasoned, and both the shrimp and fish batter lacked flavor (a little salt would go a long way).

Out of the four appetizers we ordered, we only liked one, the biscuit!

For entrées, one person ordered chicken, another ordered shrimp and grits, I ordered the salmon cheesesteak, and another ordered fish.

Since we did not enjoy the batter on the appetizers, we hoped the entrées and side accompaniments would be a better combination, we even asked for extra sauce on the side.

Unfortunately, they were not tasty. None of us ate more than a few bites of our entree, and we all packed up our food to go, with hopes that we could take it home to add some seasonings and sauces of our own. If this was not a book club event I would have sent my food back.

The only item we truly enjoyed from the entree were the grits that came with the shrimp.

Overall, the food was very underseasoned and seemed to lack care and attention.

One of the co owners came out during our visit and did not appear very friendly.
He walked past us without acknowledging us. It was only 3 parties in the entire restaurant and one was packing to leave. He could have said hello.

When my friend asked the waiter if he was an owner, he confirmed that he was one of the owners.

Although it was close to closing time, the co owner was counting cash at the register and never stopped to check on us, ask how our food was, or welcome us to the restaurant.

No one said welcome to Sweet T’s, not the greeter, not the waiter, and not the co owner.

We were extremely disappointed and I will NOT be returning.

We truly wanted to support a Black owned business, which makes this experience even more disappointing to write about.

Our bill was close to $200, with almost $40 of it being a mandatory tip.

The good news is that with Resy and Amex I got $100 off the bill. YAY! That made me feel sort of good since I was treating the entire group.

While our waiter was polite and seemed to try his best, he could benefit from additional training to improve professionalism and menu knowledge.

The restaurant was not busy, with only two other parties present at closing, so this experience wasn’t because they were busy.

NOTE: The presentation of all of the food looked was VERY good, just not the taste. This is from someone that comes from the south and has visited so many southern eateries.

Five stars for Sweet T’s! The food was great and I loved how many vegetarian options there were. The cornbread with the butter is an absolute must — so good. And the teas are phenomenal. No matter what you order, DEFINITELY get one.

Also, don’t skip the grits — they’re incredible. Everything was comforting, flavorful, and done right. Can’t wait to go back!

This was my 2nd time to this location and the food was amazing! This time I got to enjoy my friends reactions to the food that I have already had. I delightfully enjoyed the Beef short rib grilled cheese. The crunchy toast, with the savory beef short rib and the 2 types of cheese was delicious! Along with the side of potato wedges was everything I needed. I had to order a side of the candied yams as well. And to wash it all down I had the Pear Apple T with was refreshing. I am already planning my next visit.

I had the opportunity to visit Sweet T’s Southern Eatery this past weekend after hearing so much about it. I drove over an hour to try the food, so I came in with high expectations.

First, I have to say the ambiance is beautiful. The atmosphere is stellar, and the presentation of the food was impressive. Everything looked amazing when it came out.

Unfortunately, the taste did not live up to the presentation. I ordered the breaded shrimp, and while it looked great, the batter was completely lacking seasoning. The fried catfish was also disappointing and did not have the flavor or depth you expect from well-seasoned Southern-style fish. The mac and cheese with turkey was underwhelming and needed more seasoning.

The yams tasted like they came straight out of a can and were served as-is — no cinnamon, no brown sugar, no butter, no warmth or depth of flavor. They lacked that homemade Southern touch that really makes the dish special.

As someone who genuinely appreciates Southern cuisine and has dined at places like Sylvia’s in Harlem and My Father’s House in Nyack, I know what properly seasoned Southern food should taste like. Compared to those experiences, this meal fell short.

Overall, I was really disappointed in the taste of the food. The ambiance and presentation are top-tier, but for me, flavor is everything — and it just wasn’t there.I had the opportunity to visit Sweet T’s Southern Eatery this past weekend after hearing so much about it. We arrived with a party of four to celebrate my son’s birthday, he chose this restaurant, and it was a great choice.

The atmosphere and décor were inviting, with plenty of space and no long wait. The staff was friendly, and our server Najada J., was prompt and attentive throughout the meal. Smooth R&B music set the tone perfectly.

We started with Saratoga sparkling water, cornbread with strawberry butter, and Sweet T’s fried shrimp. The cornbread was good, not overly sweet, which I appreciated. The fried shrimp, however, was a standout; flaky, perfectly seasoned breading, and a side condiment with a spicy kick, similar to a mayo-ketchup blend, that complemented the shrimp and catfish beautifully.

Now for the main event: my three-piece fried chicken (breast, wing, and thigh). Cooked to perfection, moist on the inside, crispy on the outside, and seasoned far beyond the ordinary. Truly “finger-licking good.”

I was also lucky enough that those at my table shared some of their catfish, WOW, I’m sold. I’m already looking forward to ordering a full catfish entrée on my next visit.

Everything was prepared to order, which I’ll take any day. Our food arrived fresh and hot. The collard greens and mac & cheese were exactly what I hoped for, DE-LI-CIOUS. The greens were fresh, not overcooked, and perfectly seasoned. The mac & cheese had a nice crust on top while remaining creamy throughout, without a single dry bite.

Portions were generous, so much so that half of our meal came home with us for the next day.

I’m glad my son picked Sweet T’s. Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, and we will definitely be returning customers.

Sweet T’s is a solid dining experience with great service, relaxing vibe, and iconic cooking. Highly enjoyed my time!

Only critic is the seasoning. The food was good, however, it was a bit underseasoned. I expected more flavor for fried catfish and turkey wings.

We went to a show at the Wellmont so thought I would make a reservation here. Location was perfect since it was across the street from the venue. We live 2 hours away and were running late due to traffic. I called once I found a place to park. Young man was understanding. The food was awesome Vin our server went above and beyond service! The gratuity is added on the bill however it is stated on the menu. Would recommend.

I cannot believe I didn’t know about this place. Talk about delicious Southern Comfort food. Everything I at smacked my palate in most delicious and flavorful way.

Usually I start with French Toast at new restaurants, but as I walked in and saw the Chicken and Waffles being delivered I changed directions. I’m glad I did. The waffles were perfectly prepared; crunchy-ish exterior and soft interior. Temperature was perfect and melted the strawberry butter (came with the yummy cornbread) I added just perfectly.

The chicken (3 part wings — let’s normalize wings with the tips again) was well seasoned and they were huge (almost too big) and delicious.

The catfish flavors jumped off the plate and the cheese grits were the cheesiest I’ve ever had.

The customer service was top-notch and I just thought the overall ambiance was a vibe.

Definitely recommend reservations. I will certainly be back again…and again.
