I walked out already checking when I could come back. It’s that kind of place.
Honestly… everything was good
Grilled scallops with soft polenta
So tender and sweet. Comfort on a plate.
Wood-fired pizza
Perfect crust. Crisp outside, chewy inside. Even the vegetarian one was deeply satisfying
The pastas were a highlight
Taglierini alle Vongole
Hand-shelled clams, silky strands of pasta, beautifully seasoned.
Fettucine Verde
Fresh pasta ribbons with slow-cooked pork ragù, wild fennel, lemon and sage. Rich but still fresh.
Dover sole
Classic roasted fish with tomato and pumpkin. Very winter, very comforting.
Dessert was dangerous
Chocolate Nemesis
The famous one. Thin crackly top, dense and silky inside. Served with crème fraîche to balance it out.
Panna cotta with grappa and rhubarb
Silky, light, gently boozy.
Blood orange sorbet
Bright, refreshing, with real fruit texture. The perfect finish
No wonder it’s been loved for decades. I’ll definitely be back.
And a walk along the Thames after dinner makes it even better
The River Café, W6
Book at least two weeks in advance
Around £100 per person with a glass of wine
We have loved this restaurant since the days the pink oven was still shocking.
The staff is superlative.
The food…well the whole world knows about the food at this point. Started with lagoustine and the most elegant, but unidentified vegetable.
Sea kale.
Sea Kale?
Classic River Cafe choice. Beautiful, unusual, or very heirloom vegetables and fruits paired with prime quality proteins. (Imagine something between white asparagus and celeri root. But better.)
Then wonderful agnolotti with rabbit.
The. roast lamb with fennel and parmesan crisp crumbs.
Long, long wonderful lunch.
Best to the gentleman scholar and l manager Charles, who keeps the restaurant (front and otherwise facing) tip top.
Elena (who welcomed us and has the tough job of front desk and phones),.
Fernando for the excellent wine choices.
Executive Chef Sian, who directs the battalion of talent behind the Pink Oven.
And of course, to our servers (there were several) who made sure the meal was progressing at the perfect pace and the wine and water always perfectly timed.
Extraordinary food. Extraordinary staff.
Yes, expensive.
Great art usually is.
Service – plentiful, efficient, super organised (when a different waiter brings your food to the one who took the order but they still know who ordered what – that’s SERVICE.
Food – Italian country, authentic, Michelin 1 star.
To not visit before you leave this earth would be a terrestrial experience unfulfilled
The food was delicious . The sea-bass was fresh and the ravioli was really tasty. Unfortunately, we could not try other types of pasta because they were soaked in alcohol.
The setting is casual and the ambiance is buzzy.
The food was very nice, but it was really just simple and well executed- the sort of thing you’d get from a nice normal cafe or even a good home cook. It was NOT £100+ per head food. For the prices in there, you could get some serious Michelin-star-type fine dining. Very overpriced (I edit this review as I found that this place does actually have a Michelin star- well, you could not tell!)
The main that I had was a delicious £66 grilled monkfish with artichoke. It was perfectly executed, but it was not in any way innovative, particularly exciting or unusually delicious. The desserts were very lovely, but again, similar to what you could get in most decent patisseries.
It seems this place is just relying on its reputation.
The atmosphere was perfectly pleasant and the service was nice.
