My cohorts and I found ourselves on Rte. 2 near Montpelier when my driver stated, “We should stop somewhere for lunch”. This task fell on me to do a quick search, when I see a sign…This is when we stumbled upon a diner serving Travellers since 1918…My cohorts and I noted this place was hopping. We went inside. No reservations and your place in line is based on the honor system. The hostess was so nice and diplomatic. She assured people that you will be seated quick…despite the business we were quickly seated. This restaurant is huge. There was a large party in the back. Lots of neat nooks with booths tucked into these sections throughout. There was a pellet stove in the back but it was not on. Our server was really nice. She came over, took drink orders and quickly returned. I had an iced tea which was unsweetened.

The menu had so many great looking dishes, but I decided upon split pea soup. It came with soup crackers. I contempted getting a basket of Parker House Rolls (Being from near Boston, I opted out besides they came as 6 rolls). Soo the soup was thick, warm, and just really nice. All of us had a bowl.

My other cohorts had dessert. One had a slice of in-house apple pie. This was served with two Vermont slices of Cabot Cheddar. The cohort stated that the crust was so buttery textured and delicious. The other cohort had apple crisp with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Both rated them very highly.

We never felt rushed and all the patrons were great. We had a conversation with a couple about a place they had stayed at.

The bathrooms were very clean. The bathroom had a great wallpaper of outhouse(s).

This is a great stop when you need an oasis to eat and rehydrate!! From 1918 to beyond!!!

It’s been a few months since I visited.

I remember formulating a review in my mind about this place but I may have given up writing anything because I’m never going back. I do remember being annoyed that they charged me $6 for half a pancake. I recommend you avoid this place. They just seemed unprofessional here. Look at the portion size on the home fries.

Loved the cups lined up behind the booth. These were the tip cups. Restaurants like this are so ingrained in what they’re doing, they can never step back and evaluate. This is the most unsafe place to put worker’s tips; there has to be a better way.

Sadly, I have to give this place ONE STAR. I have been coming for years and ordering pies for Thanksgiving for years as well. But this year, out of the four pies that I ordered (2 apple, 1 pumpkin, 1 raspberry) – only two of them were actually edible for any length of time.

I picked them up on the day before Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, I opened up one of the Apples and it was completely filled with more liquid, than actual filling. it was a soggy mess. I emailed immediately, hoping to hear back in a couple of days but sadly, nothing.

Then on Friday, I opened the pumpkin and it immediately tasted off, but thought oh well it must not have been a good pie making here for them. But when I looked at the pie the next day (note – this is only a little over 2 days after picking them up) – and half the pie was covered in mold.

And no, where I had them stored, was not too hot or cold. All temperature controlled. Was completely stunned and grossed out.

Also, the rolls I ordered from day one felt hard but was trying to be open-minded. I am not one to normally make an official complaint, but sadly I think the Wayside has lost my business.

We went for breakfast with our baby. Great food, friendly personnel and such a great experience for us, coming all the way from Spain.

The pancakes are delicious.

Highly recommended.

This is where all the locals come to eat. Established in 1918 and still standing the test of time. Absolutely the best value home cooked meal in town. Don’t be surprised if you have to wait in line for a table.

Saw some good reviews for this place so made it out stop – it didn’t disappoint.
Food was excellent at a very reasonable price: blueberry pancakes were superb!

You’re in Montpelier? You want to know where to get dinner? You’re done picking. You’re going to Wayside. Unless your mom is a member of Daughters of the American Revolution it’s likely this place has been around before your ancestors came here. And there’s a reason it’s still going strong.

I brought a bunch of students to this fine establishment on Monday evening and we were served by Theresa, who can banter with the best! She took excellent care of us. The apple pie with cheddar and the maple cream pie were legendary! All of the food was excellent, but the chicken parm was exceptional. Thank you, Wayside, for an uplifting evening and being stalwart in central Vermont!

Had not been here before and came by default because place we were supposed to be going to was not open as their website said that they were. We learned this after an hour long drive to get there only to see a sign on the door with new hours, but they failed to change their website, and had taken our reservation. Anyhow the Wayside proved to be a great foodie place, very friendly even if not upscale. All four of our meals were great and the waitstaff was very friendly. You will not get a bad meal there, service is fast.
