Bare-bones seafood shack serving house-smoked fish, fried seafood platters & a smattering of sides.

This place is a hidden gem on the south side of Chicago. It’s a small shack tucked away on the side of the road, offering a variety of fish to take home. We ordered the peppered and garlic smoked salmon, and it was outstanding! The fish was packed with flavor and smoked to perfection. It was perfect paired with some crackers.

Smoked fish. Fried fish. Potato salad. French fries. All of it served up from a cash only counter. Service is quick, they answer any questions, and you eat outside on picnic tables next to the bridge.
ATM inside, no indoor seating, no bathroom, gets busy but line moves quickly.
We’ve had:
– smoked salmon
– smoked garlic and pepper trout
– fried catfish bites
– fried smelt
– fried shrimp
Tarter sauce and coleslaw are both very good. Smoked fish is served cold and pulls apart easily. Might want to bring your own wet wipes.
Notes:
– Parking: park anywhere on the street. Plenty of space.
– front door: you aren’t locked out. Push the door hard and it’ll open.

The smoked salmon was fantastic, some of the best I’ve had. The fried oysters were also delicious. I can’t believe I had never been to this amazing Chicago staple. Will definitely be visiting more often.

Every Chicagoan who loves fish has to try this place at least once. Its tricky to get to at first, but there’s ample street parking once you do. I usually get some fried fish or shrimp and eat outside at the picnic tables. The big draw is the smoked fish though. The pepper and garlic salmon is amazing, and the plain lake trout is great too. The fish is always moist and smoky, not dry.

I can definitely see why they’ve be at this same location for decades! The fresh smoked garlic salmon is definitely a 10 out of 10! The deep fried oysters are not overly breaded. The service is friendly and patient.

We ate a lot of good food during our weekend trip to Chicago, but I don’t think anything could beat the seafood we got at Calumet Fisheries. The fried fish and smoked shrimp were both absolutely incredible, and I felt like the portions, including a generous serving of fries, were well worth the price. There isn’t any inside seating and it was really hot outside, but it was absolutely worth sweating at the picnic tables outside to enjoy this fresh and delicious meal!

The garlic lemon pepper smoked salmon is very very very good. All the locals seem to come here for a reason. The location is very very cool. Parking can be tricky but worth the smoked salmon and fried fish options inside.

Y’all already know how good the smoked salmon is from the many reviews on this site. My first bite was on a slice of French pave’ bread and it was as everyone had raved about. But did you know it also tastes amazing, Japanese style, as a chazuke topping? I placed a good chunk atop steamed rice with green tea. Delicious across multiple cultural flavor profiles–now that’s talent.

Went today to their grand re-opening, 8 months since the fire. Went at 2pm , huge line ! (See pics) The owner came out to Thank everyone to support the business. Crowd was friendly and chatting away. Everyone was happy for their return. People came out with bags of food. Been going here for decades and it seemed like everyone showed up at the same time.
My faves are the Stuffed Shrimp and Pepper Garlic Smokes Salmon! Yum! Love the frog legs , oysters and smelt too. All good. People in line were ordering everything on the menu. Place is completely rebuilt since the fire. So, everything was spotless.
Spot is “Cash Only” so bring your appetite and a roll of Benjamin’s!

I love coming here for the fried seafood AND the smoked seafood. It is top of the line on both counts. The fried shrimp and smelt are my favorite fried food. For the smoked fish you can’t go wrong with any of the trout, salmon, whitefish, or sturgeon. Ask the clerk what most popular or what they recommend and they have great guidance if you’re not sure where to start. Cash only and worth every penny. Prices are great for the food you get. Place is a bargain.
