This good home cooking! I ate my meatloaf so fast I forgot to take a picture. Disclaimer, my wife makes a fantastic meatloaf so to find one that I like at a restaurant is few and far between.

The liver & onions, and the chicken dinner looks fantastic as well.

The food is great, the staff is very friendly, and the restaurant is clean. You can’t go wrong stopping here.

First time here and I had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, okra and pinto beans and all of it was delicious. My wife had grilled chicken tenders, orka and broccoli and the only thing she would change is cook the broccoli a little longer. Overall the meal was delicious and a good value for the money.

We decided to give this place a try. Well we are very pleased we did!! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and the food is good. I had the best chicken fried steak ever!! Fork tender and the crust did not fall away from the cut. Wifey had the Beer Batter Fried Cod. Easy to cut, flakey, not oily and it wasn’t dried out!! Mac cheese was moist and cheesy. You will it be disappointed at all. Oh my wife says that she usually doesn’t care for CFS (chicken fried steak) but she had to admit it was very good!!

Boerne, TX !! Exactly what we were seeking – Texas bbq restaurant that served chicken fried steak and okra.
Everything was tasty and the blueberry cobbler was devoured !!

Very Texan and authentic country restaurant experience – highly recommended for locals and tourists alike – especially for foreigners seeking a Texas experience.

I made it back to Hungry Horse restaurant in Boerne, Texas to try out the place. Our group entered, and were greeted by Marco (who was taking orders and manning the register). Marco was very patient with us and gave us our space to review the menu, and also answered our questions as they arose.

Our orders covered the spectrum from catfish, chicken fried steak, house salad, and chopped sirloin. Each dish came with a choice of 3 sides.

The food was prepared fresh, and ready within 20 minutes. The serving side are sizeable so choose you size of meal accordingly (pony, regular or large). Our orders were regular in size, with good helping of sides (veggies, etc.).

Just know the food and sides have a “light” to non-existent seasoning. I expected this is done so that you can salt & pepper to your taste. Veggies are steamed, and I personally recommend requesting your gravy (white or brown) on the side.

We enjoyed our visit and experience and hope you will too.

I was in the Boerne area, and decided I to see if the Hungry Horse restaurant open. Unfortunately they were not.

Note, I have not eaten a one of these restaurants since they were in the San Antonio area many many years ago.

Unfortunately, I’ve picked July. 4th as the day to stop in and try them out.

I will note, that I did try and call before arriving, but there was no answering machine to pick up and tell me the place was closed. So, I took a chance to stop by.

Thus, maybe next time when I’m in the Boerne area I’ll be lucky enough and they’ll be open.

I rated the 3 stars because I don’t believe in giving a place, especially a family owned business, one star for not being open on a holiday, and I don’t believe in rating the place 5 stars either. So, I took the middle of the road for rating this time.

I’ll add more pictures when I revisit.

We were in Boerne visiting family and they recommended this restaurant highly. It did not disappoint. Portion size is huge. You have a choice of large, regular, or “pony” size for your entrees. I opted for the vegetable plate (regular size) with a salad and I was shocked at how much food I received. Many times at cafes, they will serve one spoonful servings in those small melamine bowls, but that’s not the case at Hungry Horse! The salad was a full size green salad and the vegetable portions were more than generous. I could have easily had two meals from this one plate. Some other reviews have complained about no seasoning, but I enjoyed the fact that the food was not over salted or laden in bacon grease. The fried okra was fresh and crispy, mashed potatoes were definitely homemade, the sliced carrots were great, and I did enjoy the mac and cheese which was homemade. I also liked the lightly sweetened muffin which seemed to be a zucchini muffin? It was not overpoweringly sweet, which was a nice surprise. My daughter had green beans and I was glad to see that they were not canned nor were they soaked in bacon grease. Had I known this, I would have ordered the green beans, which are definitely not canned, but instead look like they are either fresh or frozen and then cooked/steamed. Daughter also ordered the chicken fried steak which she said was excellent. Other members of our party had the grilled chicken and the cheeseburgers. Everyone enjoyed the meal and especially the onion rings, which are hand cut and battered.

We would definitely come back to this restaurant. It reminds me of an old school Southern buffet, minus the actual buffet if that makes sense!

Such a let down! Let’s start with the fact we did not see one spot marked for disabled. We were trying out a new restaurant for my son’s birthday. I had the meatloaf, husband had the chicken fried steak and son had the bacon cheese burger. The boys shared the cheese sticks. I tasted the sauce with the sticks and it reminded me of canned Ragu or Chef Boyardee. Son said the burger and Mac and cheese were good (14 year old). Meatloaf was large but bland and the brown gravy on it and the potatoes was a congealed lump of sauce. The green beans and carrots had NO seasoning and tasted like they came out of a can. The chicken fried steak my husband said was okay but again the gravy was lacking and the corn also had no seasoning. I will say the little muffins were pretty good! For the amount of money we spent on dinner, we could have gone to a chain American restaurant, spent less money and had more flavor. Expensive mistake if you ask me.

Party of 6. No one ate more than a couple of bites. Uncooked steak fingers, clumpy and cold gravy, and very old mac & cheese. The chicken fried steak is actually a hamburger patty and was greasy. The chili pot pie was just off. No flavor and strange. No thanks. The staff was nice and welcoming, but that can’t overcome poor food quality.

I was the DJ for a wedding recently catered by Hungry Horse Restaurant and Catering, and unfortunately, many of us—including myself, the bride and groom, several guests, the venue staff, and the event coordinator—became sick shortly after eating the food that was served.

While the staff was friendly and the presentation looked fine, the aftermath was concerning and disappointing. Food safety is critical for any event, especially weddings, and this experience caused a lot of discomfort and disruption for everyone involved.

I hope the company reviews their food handling and preparation processes to ensure this doesn’t happen again at future events.

If you’re looking for a solid, home-cooked meal in Boerne, you can’t beat The Hungry Horse. I stopped in for lunch and ordered the Pony-sized Chicken Fried Steak with Homestyle Fries and Mac and Cheese.
The ‘Pony’ size was actually the perfect portion for lunch—it gave me that classic Texas comfort food fix without being overwhelming. The steak was seasoned well and had a great crunch, the mac and cheese was creamy, and the fries were spot on. It’s a great, friendly atmosphere and the service was quick. I’ll definitely be coming back here next time I’m in town!
