Primavera – Where Chicken is a Calling and the Tables are Long Enough for Your Whole Life Story

When our African souls start whispering “chicken”, we head straight to Primavera – our local legend on R. Morais Soares. It’s the kind of place where the tables are long, the vibe is communal, and you can find your own corner while still sharing elbow space and side-eye commentary with other hungry patrons.

Weekends here are a slice of Lisbon life: families queue, kids bounce, and the grill master turns frango like he was born with tongs in hand. Honestly, the man is the embodiment of the phrase “são muitos anos a virar frangos” many years flipping chickens, and it shows. He’s always there, always grilling, always glorious.

Our go-to waiter, Gonçalo (aka Mr Smiley), greets us like old friends and wisely advises on portion control, especially when Dion’s eyes go full cartoon-heart at the sight of grilled chicken and chips. We tested the rotisserie version – frango assado no espeto – for those of us who prefer less smoke and more crisp. Verdict? Crispiest skin, moistest breast, and a round of satisfied sighs.

Beware the periperi oil. It looks innocent. It smells divine. It will ambush your taste buds when you least expect it. Proceed with caution and a cold drink.

Dessert? I’m loyal to the pudim de ovos, that silky Portuguese flan that never lets me down. The baba de camelo (yes, camel slobber, don’t ask) is sweeter than a love song and a hit with the family – though I recommend sharing unless you’ve got a serious sugar tolerance.

Sagres beer on tap keeps the mood light, and for Sean, the Sagres Preta stout in a bottle is the dark, broody companion to his grilled feast.

Verdict: Primavera is the kind of place where chicken cravings are answered with love, the service is warm, and the periperi is plotting against you. Highly recommended for comfort food, community vibes, and crispy skin that dreams are made of.

A great restaurant serving top‑quality grilled chicken. The meat was juicy, perfectly seasoned, and had that ideal skin — honestly one of the best grilled chickens I’ve ever had. The pleasant atmosphere and friendly, efficient service make this a place worth returning to

It’s the quintessential Portuguese chicken joint. Choose between rotisserie or charcoal grilled, with rice and fries. There are other things on the menu, but this is a chicken joint. We go every week, and have done so for years. Our favorite waiter, Fernando, knows our order and has become a great friend. LOVE this place!

Great grilled chicken and cod. This place is packed with locals and tourists.
Don’t forget to bring cash as they don’t accept foreign credit card.

Look just to get it out of the way my own performance as a diner was excellent, as was the salmon. But I was so funny that I made somebody at the next table spit his coffee over the maitre de. The maitre de took that like a champ and his gracious smile, in addition to the outstanding grilled fish , justifies 5 stars.

They were not in the least bit discombobulated by our shenanigans. 5/5 would recommend

The rotisserie chicken is the bomb! So juicy and flavorful. Got mine with salad and boiled potatoes.

Service was super sweet, fun and helpful. They love foreigners even though it seems to be a local place. Bring euros!

Before standing in the long line, ask if it is for a table or takeout. We waited in line not realizing it was the line for takeout. Enjoy!

Delightful return for a Sunday lunch. The place – which is a little out of the way – was packed with families enjoying (mainly) big platters of chicken with savory rice and hand cut chips, while others queued for takeout. Good atmosphere, very friendly staff and smashing food.

Visited on a Saturday at lunch time for awesome roast chicken and rabbit, with salty chips and a simple tomato salad. The no-frills room was buzzing with locals enjoying the great food, which is offers amazing value. If you’re in the neighbourhood, stop by, and expect to do your ordering in Portuguese.

The real deal. This is authentic Portuguese chargrilled chicken. Don’t let the basic decor fool you: it’s delicious.

Just a tip: have cash on you. We had problems with non Portuguese cards.
