The highlights were definitely the Mala Prawns (loved the fun gloves they provided to keep things clean!) and the Mapo Tofu, which had the perfect balance of spice and numbness. We also ordered the eggplant and green beans, which were cooked to perfection.
A huge shoutout to our server, Emma. She was amazing. super friendly and gave us some fantastic recommendations that really made our night. We’ll definitely be back!
We visited on a Thursday evening and waited about 15 minutes for a table. One quick heads-up: the food here is authentically spicy, so definitely be prepared for that Sichuan heat!
We ordered a few different dishes to share. I personally didn’t love the cold chicken, as it was a bit too sour for my taste. The Sichuan chicken, on the other hand, was easily my favorite! We also really enjoyed the peppercorn beef and the steamed fish. While the flavors were great, the fish was almost too spicy at times—even for someone used to some heat.
Overall, the portion sizes are very generous, which I really appreciated. It’s a great spot as long as you can handle the spice!
That said, the portion sizes are great for sharing, especially if you go with a group, and the staff was very kind and accommodating. The menu is also extensive and has a lot of interesting options.
The atmosphere was honestly the most underwhelming part for me. Online photos make the space look quaint but spacious, but in reality it’s quite small and can feel cramped. Luckily we sat in a booth, but I imagine the middle tables might feel a bit chaotic when it’s busy.
Overall, I still really enjoyed dining here and would definitely come back to try more dishes.
The food here is the real star. The heat level is bold without ever sacrificing flavor, and every dish feels thoughtfully crafted. The spices are aromatic, the textures are on point, and even classics taste elevated. Whether it’s a noodle dish, something braised, or one of their signature appetizers, everything arrives hot, beautifully presented, and absolutely packed with flavor.
Service is quick and efficient, even when the restaurant is packed (which is almost always). The staff knows the menu well and is great about offering suggestions if you’re stuck between dishes.
Portions are generous, prices are fair for the quality, and it’s the kind of place you finish your meal at already thinking about what you want to order next time.
If you’re craving authentic, spicy, and deeply satisfying Szechuan food, Szechuan Mountain House never disappoints. Highly recommend!
