Back in 1987 we needed a place to go. A place to drink good coffee and watch the world go by. A place where good food was homemade and where the desserts were fresh. We decided to buy and renovate a derelict building on old Route 66 in Nob Hill. Along the way we started a scratch bakery, cooked a lot of good food, learned to roast coffee beans and got so busy that we had to build more cafes. Today, despite a few more locations, a name change, and 350 more employees, we are still a small, local company that serves up community from scratch every day.
Relaxed cafe chain serving globally influenced American fare, including all-day breakfast.

Food & Drink
The menu boasts a variety of options, from hearty breakfast dishes like the Two Birds & a Biscuit and Fabulous French Toast, to lunch favorites such as the Californian Melt and Athena Salad. Dessert lovers will appreciate the selection of cakes and pies, including the Rio Grande Mud Pie and Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Beverage offerings include quality coffee drinks and teas, with the London Fog being a standout.
Atmosphere
Flying Star Café locations are known for their inviting interiors, featuring ample seating and a relaxed vibe. Many patrons enjoy the outdoor seating options, which are pet-friendly. However, some customers have noted that the music can be quite loud, making conversation difficult at times.
Service & Pricing
Service is generally efficient, with a counter-ordering system followed by table delivery. While the staff is often praised for their friendliness, some patrons have experienced inconsistencies in service quality. Pricing is on the higher side for casual dining, which may not align with everyone’s expectations.
Accessibility
Parking availability varies by location. Some sites, like the one on Central Ave NE, have limited parking, which can be challenging during peak hours. Additionally, there have been mentions of insufficient handicapped parking spots at certain locations.
⭐ Overall
Flying Star Café offers a comfortable dining experience with a wide-ranging menu that appeals to many. While there are areas for improvement, particularly in service consistency and pricing, it remains a popular choice for both locals and visitors seeking a casual meal in Albuquerque.
The menu offers a great variety of dishes, but I like to stick with something familiar when trying a new place. I chose the grilled fish tacos, and they did not disappoint! The fish was incredibly tender, and the garnish had this perfect blend of sweet and salty that was absolutely delicious. As a Mexican, I usually need salsa with my tacos, and I was a bit worried when none came out. However, the tacos had a creamy chipotle sauce that was so flavorful, it more than made up for it. The plate came with three tacos, each with a double tortilla—super satisfying and filling.
Overall, Flying Star Cafe is a relaxed spot with good food and a unique ordering system. The grilled fish tacos alone are worth the visit!
As a tip, don’t let yourself get stuck at the large menu board, you can grab a paper menu and walk farther down. I kind of wish they’d change the way they took orders, it usually ends up with bottlenecks way before the actual order takers. They have beer now too, I’m not sure if they always did but that’s nice if you’re looking for a cold one, and of course, their coffee and teas and desserts are great.
The atmosphere is nice, the servers and order takers always seem fine, and the food’s quite tasty. There’s lots of seeding too, so you usually don’t have to worry about where you’re going to be able to sit.
My dad’s chicken sandwich was mostly breading and he went up to the counter to tell them he would rather just cancel the order and be refunded after a couple bites.
Someone introduced themselves as a manager shortly thereafter and asked my dad to explain what had happened. My dad proceeded to tell him what had happened and the manager very rudely stated that maybe it was because my dad had a beers and didn’t understand the logistics of food being prepared at a restaurant. My wife (who is pregnant and obviously not drinking) stated to the man that it wasn’t a matter of understanding logistics rather that the order had been forgotten and also sub par. The so called “manager” raised his palm to my wife a told her stay out if it and that the matter didn’t concern her.
My father’s first language is Spanish and this was very demeaning to hear someone talk down to him and my wife especially in this day and age. Instead of trying to understand the problem, he just made excuses that didn’t align with what we were telling him. He was very dismissive, belittling, and truly should not be in a customer service role. As a manager, he should set a good example for his team and show empathy and understanding for all customers. This man would not give us his name after asking him multiple times. He instead got frustrated with listening and told us to leave. Needless to say we will never come here again and I would caution anyone that would like to come here, while they are employing such blatantly racist and sexist management.
