Extensive wine list which is well priced. Oleg will help you pick something incredible.
Highly recommend
In my experience, the starters clearly stood out the most, followed by the main courses, while desserts were the weakest part of the meal. The smoked eel starter was excellent, with the combination of licorice and apple showing the chef’s thoughtful creativity. The cod main course was cooked perfectly and paired well with a scallion-infused flatbread. However, the chicken main course we ordered was less successful, as part of the meat was quite dry.
Dessert did not leave a strong impression. The almond cake and sobacha broth lacked cohesion, and the candied apple added sweetness without much aroma or crispness.
Eels is an attractive spot in one of the livelier areas of Paris, and filled up quickly with local diners. Service from Oleg and his colleagues was impeccable – friendly, attentive and knowledgeable.
The food was outstanding – beautifully presented, balanced dishes with harmonious flavours and flawlessly executed. I had the 5-course tasting menu starting with the smoked eel, liquorice, apple and hazelnuts in a smoked butter sauce, then the Comte-coated endives (an unexpected favourite, I don’t think I could have got tired eating this). The two ‘main’ courses were generous portions of cod with cockles and turnip and poultry with cabbage and shallots. Dessert was the Cedrat crunch and coffee cream.
One previous reviewer declared food of Michelin star standard but that isn’t really the point – if all restaurants were this good, you wouldn’t care if Michelin existed or not.
I had a delightful time at Eels and would very happily go back.
They put perilla leaves in the dessert and totally ruined the chocolate mousse — it’s somewhere too bitter and somewhere too sweet. I have a hard time finishing any of the dishes. It’s too bad, I can’t believe I wasted 2 hours in the restaurant.
Reservation recommended. Service was friendly too.
