My friends and I helped celebrated our good friend’s forty something birthday (with 20 plus people) . We were all familiar with the check in, the wait for our grills. In our case, we had two grills reserved. Keeping in mind, that each grill will be sharing a unique dining experience and that eating time will typically be an hour later, give or take. Unless you’re a regular, figuring out what you want on the menu is another episode and then placing the order, is another.
We had waited at the bar initially for our party to arrive and settle inside the very small space lobby area. Congestion all over, but the bar area was open space with many tables and chairs to choose from. Service at the bar area i rate a 2 to 3 star. Two bartenders on shift dealing with meal orders one side and then there’s us, waiting in line at the bar to order drinks. Not sure if the two even acknowledged our presence. Nonetheless, 10 minutes or so later, we placed our order. The Lychee martini was on point. Not use to paying $17 for this cocktail in San Diego but then again could it be because we’re in Laguna??? The martini was so good, had to stop at the third order. Let’s just say we were super thirsty after our hour and half drive from San Diego 😉 Bartenders need to step it up, check their surroundings and move a little quicker when taking drink orders at the bar area.
We had a nice server, nothing more to highlights. Had to look for her couple times for glassof water and drinks refill.
The chef was friendly but felt the chef across the way (rat stuff animal sitting on his left shoulder) had lots more flair, personality and unique tricks during our teppanyaki dining experience. I felt our chef could have use some training from him. Ok same note, i am mindful that our Chef maybe new. Note that all chefs at Benihana are not alike. I Just enjoyed the dining experience with the group.
Our food was tasty. Loved the sauce (forgot the name) that was offered to each guests. I will say that we were all satisfied, at both tables.
Three hours later, we had to leave and head home to San Diego.

We had a table reservation at 6.30 were seated promptly with 4 other people who were very nice. Across from us was a couple and a family of four celebrating a birthday. Their chef came quickly, sang beautifully and had a whole drum show.
Our waiter appeared after approximately 30min wait time and asked if we wanted california roll or spicey edamame on the house as they anticipated a little wait period for us. We waited through their entire mea, there was no Server in sight. No one came to ask if we wanted a drink or something else l, it was over an hour when our chef appeared. (I believe we should’ve been especially taken care off due to the extensive wait , more frequent run bys and information. Thats why service receives one star)
He was nervous, as one couples mood was tense as they were getting tired and wanted to leave.
Our Chef , Azrael did everything he could to keep us entertained. He just started the job recently , but he worked quickly and prepared delicious meals.
His humor, made us forget that we actually waited from 6.30- 8.30 until we could start eating our meal.
We did receive a discount on our bill but that was a extensive wait.
Beni Hana needs to hire more chefs like Azrael and the singing one (we didn’t catch his name)
We left when the restaurant was almost empty….
Its also to be noted that there seems to be a plumbing issue , as the entrance area and bathrooms smell disgustingly like sewer. Might be worth fixing as it repels and I don’t think we will be coming back , except if we can book a dinner with Azrael.
Benihana has this promotion on a regular basis and last had at different times. Thanks to Luke for the great service!!
The $39 promotion includes soup or salad, then different option for sushi and I got the rainbow roll, then comes with chicken or steak with onions or squash on the side. I had the steak and it was so good. (good portion size)
Also chicken fried rice.
Since so much food I got the sushie to go.
Finished off with vanilla, chocolate ice cream and I had orange sherbet.
What more could you ask for on the great meal and awesome service from Luke!
Great traditions with rewards program and Benihana has good selection for food and spirits.
It was clear that tables were being double-booked, which resulted in guests with reservations being forced to wait. That completely defeats the purpose of making a reservation in the first place.
This experience was frustrating and unprofessional. If you’re going to offer reservations, they should actually mean something. Unfortunately, this was unacceptable and left a very negative impression.
Prices are surprisingly reasonable, considering how much restaurant prices have gone up everywhere else. And portion sizes are pretty good too.
Fried rice was good as usual, but everything else was too salty. The ingredient quality is just ehh. Our chef was not that engaging, but the onion volcano came out great!
The service was not the best. We didn’t have enough chairs or place settings for our party, and had to ask for things multiple times.
My biggest gripe is the parking. They close off half the parking lot for valet to push people into paying $10 for valet service. Very uncool.
We sat in the bar area and were literally the only guests there. It still took over 20 minutes for anyone to come take our drink/appetizer order. After ordering, it took another 20+ minutes for the drinks and appetizers to arrive.
When we finally ordered food, the issues continued. We ordered the wagyu fried rice with the wagyu cooked rare and medium rare. What arrived was well done, cold, and not even close to what we ordered. When we asked for it to be fixed, we were told they couldn’t because they had run out of wagyu beef. So we waited a long time just to be served the wrong, cold order—and then were told there was no way to correct it.
To make it worse, we ordered a side of hibachi shrimp. I’ve ordered this many times at Benihana, but this time we were charged $18 for three shrimp—and they were also delivered cold. We were told they would “make it right” on the bill, but nothing was corrected.
Overall: extremely slow service, cold food, incorrect cooking temperatures, and no follow-through on fixing the bill. It was an embarrassing showing for a restaurant that used to be enjoyable. I won’t be back.
