Our family has been wanting to go to Barella’s coffee house for years now. We are just not in that location. Well, I got to go today with my special friend for her birthday. The first thing we walked into was a atmosphere of nostalgia. It is a super cool restaurant on the inside. The service was wonderful. We were greeted as soon as we sat down. Our waiter was Mario. He took great care of us and he was just as cute as can be and helped make our dining fun and enjoyable. We both got cheese enchiladas with Christmas chile. Both the red and green chile are wonderful. I really love the green. Both Chile’s are made with a little bit of pork in them. When you get bites of the pork with the chile it’s very satisfying to the palate. The beans were also wonderful. They have homemade tortillas there. There’s nothing better than a homemade tortilla fresh and warm like they serve it. It is a very authentic New Mexican restaurant. There is one big disappointment I have. Fresh produce is so important and it’s a drag that they have bagged lettuce and diced onions. There is just a taste and a smell to the produce that is bagged like that. However, we will definitely be going back. There are so many menu items to choose from. We have to keep going back and trying more. Pancakes, hash browns, posole, chile bowls, and many other items, what are we going to try next?

Barelas Coffee House isn’t just a breakfast spot—it’s a living artifact of New Mexico. You feel it the moment you walk in, past the rack of small candies and trinkets by the register, through the crooked, maze-like rooms of what was once clearly someone’s home. Nothing here is trying to impress you, and that’s exactly the point.

The huevos rancheros arrive the way they always should: unapologetic and deeply rooted in tradition. The red chile is fragrant, soulful, and alive—bold without being showy. The beans taste like the land itself, as if they’d been simmering since sunrise, and the hash browns crackle with a comforting, grease-kissed crunch that only decades of muscle memory in the kitchen can produce.

The room hums with easy conversation—friends catching up, neighbors lingering, and the occasional local politician from either side of the aisle sharing space without ceremony. This is a place where ideology takes a back seat to hunger, gratitude, and good food done right.

The burrito ordered across the table was a thing of beauty—simple, hefty, and honest. Wash it all down with strong, no-nonsense diner coffee and you understand why this place endures.

You won’t find food influencers staging photos here, and thank God for that. Barelas doesn’t need filters or reinvention. This is New Mexico, true and unvarnished—and it’s exactly how breakfast should be.

Wow!! Ordered the adovada enchilada plate and a breakfast burrito, both were DELICIOUS the adovada was so incredibly tender. Plus the service was very welcoming and extremely funny. Our server Donna was cracking us up the whole meal as if we’d know her for years. 10/10 will be returning on our next trip to Albuquerque.

Barela’s is such a delightful find!! I will come here any morning I’m in the area. I was seated in the lovely sunroom and had good, quick service courtesy of Julia! It’s a little loud/echoey in there but just makes it feel like you’re at a big family gathering. Homey.

The food was excellent – carne adovada with eggs was the flavor-explosion, melt on your mouth kind of New Mexican food one dreams of. Eggs perfectly cooked, green and red chile packed full of flavor but not too spicy to overpower the rest of the dish, and a soft fluffy fresh homemade tortilla to balance the meal. Hash browns perfectly crispy. Diner coffee to boot. I love this place, so glad to have found it. Will be back!

If you are from here and never been, you need to go:) If you are just visiting this Local Coffee Shop is a must visit place to eat.
Service was absolutely spectacular, food was fresh and delicious. The Huevos Rancheros Deluxe, Chicharon Burrito and Carne Adovada Enchiladas were Phenomenal. The tortillas Chips and Salsa were tasty as usual
Red Green or both is a must even if you ask for it on the side.
Our waitress was friendly, gave exceptional customer service, went above and beyond for our group.
Every time I have come the service is outstanding. The food is always cooked to perfection and has a wonderful relaxing atmosphere. The prices are great and always worth waiting for a table if you go during a busy time. 😀

An epic breakfast. Barelas is a cultural icon and they should be considering it for a World Heritage Site. This is the best breakfast in Albuquerque, new Mexico and perhaps the world. Excellent, considerate and attentive service as always and a friendly, casual atmosphere. The breakfast itself packs a nice heat and depth and combines nicely with their home made flour tortilla to clean up.
Once you have finished your breakfast I recommend a visit to the nearby shop The Man’s Hat Shop – ignore the title, all are welcome.
Once this is complete you will have the world at your feet. You are ready for a great day. Enjoy

Was visiting from out of state and came to try this place. The service was good the atmosphere was nice. I was a little disappointed in the food. I got the enchiladas my tortillas were hard. The rice was hard and is not the best, taste like it’s from a box. My daughter got the combination plate and when she grabbed her taco it was watery underneath on the plate and soggy. Everyones taste is different maybe it’s because we’re out of state people lol

My wife has often met friends here for years and always raves. This was my first visit with her.
I was singularly impressed. I grew up in Abq and yet never went here. They are THE BEST NM/Southwest food I have ever had!!
Sorry Monroe’s, Sadie’s: give up, El Pinto: good when mom and dad were alive but the boys have ruined everything!
BARELAS is sublime!
Daily homemade dishes. Best Tortillas for the side: thick, soft & chewy, delicious. Excellent Carne Adobada, addictive Red & Green Chile. While many places do eggs well, the over easy eggs were the best prepared I have had in years.
I am excited to go back and try everything from their menu!
I will be eating here OFTEN!

The service was excellent, 10/10
The restaurant has a diner and family feel with beautiful outdoor seating. You can just tell the locals love it here.

The food came out so quick, which usually makes me nervous. The meat was tasty and tender. The hash browns were good.
However my eggs tasted like it was not made to order, like it was just seating there for awhile. I love eggs and a restaurant who can’t get eggs right is worrisome.

The red chilli sauce was runny and forgettable.

They got the meats right but everything else I had was mediocre.
