What really stood out to me was Ms. Christy telling me to sit and eat while I served my children their food. She and the other gentleman came over and helped me while I sat and ate peacefully. She even came over and kept them company while I took my time to enjoy my meal. Whether they knew it or not, they helped me catch my breath from such a busy week. They helped me pack everyone’s food as I told them I was going to give my kids the leftovers for lunch tomorrow. We had a wholesome experience❤️
I was in the area for the night staying at a nearby hotel. There isn’t a lot in the area and I didn’t want to uber so decided to walk over and give Fat Boyz a try.
The interior is that of a good bbq place. Pretty basic, with some country chic decor, not pretentious or pretending to be a bbq place.
When you walk in, you ring yourself up on the tablet, there’s no cashier. I placed my order and there was only 1 other person waiting. There were 2 people working. I was a little surprised that it took 20 minutes from the time I ordered until I received my food. The dining area was hot, couldn’t feel any air so was an uncomfortable wait. Right before my food was ready I was asked if I got my drink, which I had not so she gave me a cup. The drink machine was not working. I brought it to her attention and was told they must have tripped a breaker. I’m thinking this location wasn’t built to house an operation like this as there were extension cords everywhere so no wonder a breaker was tripped. I was halfway through my meal before they got it working again and I was able to get a drink. The breaker must also operate the AC as I finally felt air circulating once that was fixed.
Now the food was very good. The pulled pork portion was huge. Didn’t come close to finishing it and since I was in a hotel I didn’t take the leftover. The Mac & cheese was cheesey and had a great flavor. The collard greens were cooked just right and had a great seasoning to them. They had a variety of sauces on the table and the ones I tried were very good and I kept alternating which ones I had because I couldn’t decided which I liked best. The Texas toast is an extra charge unless you pick it as one of your sides. At $3.50 for toast when most places include it, I was surprised. The meal plus toast and a drink was $30.
So the food taste and portion size were the positives here. The price, wait time, temperature in the dining area and drink machine issues are what knocked it down a bit.
As I started my review, the ambiance is perfectly fitting for a good, bbq restaurant but the price and wait was more equivalent to the more modern (and not as good) locations.
Do I recommend? Maybe if you order ahead and take it to go because I won’t take away that the food was actually very good.
