I don’t know if this was a nightmare or a real-life experience, but more or less about 13 years ago in Denton, Texas, was the last time I had been to a Chuy’s restaurant. From what I can remember, it left me with a very bland impression of what their food was about. I didn’t think it matched—much less exceeded—anything I could find at a fast-food restaurant. Quite frankly, it felt like any other fast-food chain.
The only difference was that there was a waitress.
Fast forward to today, January 5th, 2026. A good friend of mine—someone whose judgment I usually trust—pitched the idea of going to Chuy’s. At first, I almost declined, but then I remembered he owed me lunch. So I said, “Yeah, why not? If anything, we’ll be wasting your money.” So we went.
I tried to erase my past experience from memory and give it a fair shot. When I arrived, I immediately noticed the beautiful atmosphere. The reception was outstanding as well. We sat down, and then my heart deflated a bit when I looked at the menu again. There’s nothing wrong with the menu, but many of the options are just very generic. The beauty of the restaurant, the atmosphere, and the warm reception simply don’t match what Chuy’s offers as the end product. They excel at every part of the experience—except the food. It’s an awesome restaurant that seems to be trying very hard to be average.
And I’m not just saying this based on looks—I’m saying it based on taste.
The chips were paper-thin and broke every time I dipped them into the sauce. The salsa had no flavor at all—just tomatoes swimming with onions and who knows what else. The so-called onion dip should be ashamed of being called onion dip. I ordered the carne asada tacos, and my goodness—just a pinch of salt would have made them more palatable. But there was no flavor. The rice had nothing going for it either. The beans were forgettable. The avocado—good by default, because avocado is good on its own—was probably the only redeeming item on the plate.
I just don’t get it. I probably never will. Maybe there’s a niche group of people who love average food as long as they’re sitting down and being served. I don’t know. I usually reserve that level of food for a fast-food chain—where I drive up, grab it, and get out. But here? I don’t know.
Maybe I’ll never understand what Chuy’s is about in the end. I loved everything about it—except the food, which fails miserably if this is supposed to be a restaurant.

My first time at Chuy’s at Tulsa Hills, ate out on their patio. They had great friendly service and food was delicious, with true tex mex taste. Lovely atmosphere and cocktails were on point I had the King’s Combo which had a variety of their enchiladas & a crispy taco. Very good!!!

Had the tortilla soup. Looks good, but looks can be deceiving. Props for charring the corn and for the fresh avocado. The broth was lacking flavor. The cheese was half melted and clumpy in the bottom of the bowl. The salsa for the chips and salsa was one of the saltiest things I’ve ever tasted. I’m pretty sure the lid to the salt opened when someone was making the batch. The loaded queso was decent I actually enjoyed it. The chips are a nice thin texture. But let me tell you about the worst part. Do not get the churros. I’m hoping that somebody did not cook them well and that the way they serve them was a mistake. When you bit into it, it oozed of very old nasty fryer oil and this nasty oil completely coated your mouth in a horrific flavor. 10/10 do not recommend the churros. It is a crime to serve them.

Caitlyn did an outstanding job as our waitress. She was quick, efficient, and extremely attentive throughout our entire visit. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better waitress and she made sure everything was taken care of promptly and with a great attitude. On top of that, she was kind enough to apply my military discount, which I greatly appreciated. Her professionalism and excellent service made the experience even better. Highly recommend asking for Caitlyn if you’re dining here.

We had a good time eating at this place. The hostess and server were very pleasant and added value to the experience. The food was good, I rate it 8 out of 10. I had the burrito, it was good, but the beans were on the dry side. My wife had the burrito bowl and she really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was pleasant with the busy decor, all the paintings and pictures on the walls make the restaurant candy for the eyes. We will come back again when we are in town.

I love Chuys usually, but it is such a treat due to the price we don’t often get to go. Tonight went extremely poorly. First we waited for nearly 40 minutes on a Tuesday night to be seated, which is fine, I understand being busy. However, my fried chicken was far overdone it was black in many places and the oil tasted bitter and old. I figured sometimes you just strike out like that, and I don’t complain about my meals. My girlfriend’s steak burrito though also was severely overdone–the steak was burnt and dried out.
Like I said, I don’t usually complain but we spent a great deal of time and money on a woefully bad meal.
Edit: I feel like they were understaffed and were struggling that evening. The waiter was really good and when the management team saw this review they took it serious and asked for further feedback.
Every team has mistakes, it is how you react to those mistakes that makes a real difference. I’m now a big fan of Chuy’s customer relations department, the way they care about their brand, and will be using them again.

Great service, cool place. Food tastes good. They got me on a 8 dollar spoon full of guacamole! Come on. There is a pile of lettuce under it. Its spread thin over lettuce. This biwl should be half full of guac.I’m fairly upset due to the idea of it. More lettuce and tomatoes than anything! Not sure they’ll get another visit from me

We love Chuy’s and frequented a location in Birmingham Alabama prior to moving to Oklahoma. This was our first visit to the Tulsa location. The food is excellent, exactly what we wanted. Cheese dip was wonderful, the jalapeno ranch dip is my favorite. Our server was fantastic. He was attentive without being annoying and very kind. We were there an hour before close. The restaurant was clean, bathrooms were clean and every employee greeted us or said goodbye on our way out. This was a really great experience. We will be back!
Pictured is the cheese, jalapeno ranch, and salsa dips for the chips.

Loved it! First time here, and we really liked it. The cheese with ground beef and guacamole it’s delicious. I highly recommend you the happy hour, weekdays from 3 to 6pm. Good margaritas and the complematry chops and salsa. The salsa is really good.

My wife and kids went in today to celebrate her friends bday and it turned out to be the biggest mistake. Server took the drink order only to come back and spill all the drinks from the tray onto my 5 year old, (it was drinks for 7 people). Server tried the best that it could do to apologize and help clean up. But regardless my son was soaked and she had no choice but to leave. The thing that I am the most mad about is the fact that a manager never once got involved! A patron gets roughly 7 glasses of water spilled on their kid and you don’t even go and see what’s happening? How lazy are you? After my wife left she asked her friend if a manger ever came over to say anything and nope, not one damn word! So needless to say this place is completely incompetent from servers to mangers, and yeah we’ll never be going back.
*Update after they responded
Sorry for the lack of attention? Your transgender server tried giving attention that was completely unwanted to my 5 year old. This whole organization disgusts me.
