I recently visited Old Heidelberg Restaurant expecting authentic German cuisine, but unfortunately this was one of the most disappointing German dining experiences I’ve had.

To start with the positive: the goulash soup was actually quite good. It had decent flavor and was the only dish that felt properly prepared.

Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was very poor.

The potato pancakes were especially disappointing. Traditional potato pancakes should be made with shredded potatoes, but these appeared to be made with mashed potatoes, which completely changed the texture and made them taste wrong.

The red cabbage was extremely bland and had a dull, discolored appearance, which made it seem like it had been reheated too many times.

The biggest issue was the Wiener schnitzel. It was very greasy, as if it had been cooked in excessive butter or oil. The flavor was overwhelmingly buttery rather than crisp and balanced. On top of that, there was a $6 upcharge for veal, even though authentic Wiener schnitzel is traditionally made with veal. The quality of the veal itself was also quite poor.

Another frustration was that the restaurant would not allow substitutions for the mashed potatoes that come with the dish. If you want fries instead, they charge an additional fee.

Overall, aside from the goulash soup, the food quality was very disappointing and far from what I would expect from a restaurant serving German cuisine. Based on this experience, I would unfortunately recommend avoiding this restaurant.

This was one of those “I hope I made the right choice” meals. I did!

The potato pancakes, schnitzel, and fleischkase were made in-house and delicious. Prices are very reasonable too. We loved the genuinely friendly service and the local vibe.

First time at this restaurant, I ordered a .5 liter German beer, and for dinner I had the Goulash plate, it was amazing. The atmosphere is phenomenal with a lots of decoration from different places in Germany. Definitely a place to visit and enjoy some really good food

Today we were passing through this city, and it so happened that it was also our friend’s birthday, and we had to decide where to go. Italian, Moroccan, or some kind of atmospheric restaurant? But when we accidentally found a German restaurant, we decided to try it, as it looked very appealing in the photos.
And we tasted it. I recommend it. We had a great time. The portions are large. The beer is delicious.

As a third generation German I absolutely loved this place!! It’s totally a little hole in the wall with delicious food and even better service. The food was super close to my Oma’s and I couldn’t have been happier to spend my birthday there with my mom. I live in Miami and I will definitely go back! Thank you so much!!!

We decided to stop by this German restaurant, but unfortunately the experience was far from the best. Right at the entrance, it already felt like the staff wasn’t very engaged: a few servers were standing nearby, yet none of them acknowledged us, greeted us, or offered any help with seating. In the end, we had to choose a spot ourselves and sit at the bar on our own.

After we sat down, quite a bit of time passed before the bartender appeared. As it later became clear, he had gone to the kitchen to pick up food for other guests — the restaurant has no bussers, and this immediately creates a sense of disorganization and a lack of proper workflow. The bartender himself seemed tired, though he was friendly and tried to be welcoming, which was probably one of the few positive aspects of the visit.

The smell in the establishment is something that really stood out — and not in a good way. There is a very strong damp, musty odor inside, and it’s noticeable right away. It makes the atmosphere uncomfortable, especially for a place where people come to relax and enjoy a meal.

Overall, the atmosphere and service left mixed impressions, leaning more toward the negative side. The place feels unpolished, worn down, and not particularly welcoming. Most likely, we won’t be returning.

Absolutely amazing experience. Our waitress, Jackie, was fantastic super friendly, knowledgeable about the entire menu, and gave us some great recommendations. I haven’t had German food this good since leaving New York 10 years ago. The Sauerbraten was rich and flavorful, the Pork Schnitzel was perfectly cooked, and the potato dumplings were to die for. Even the homemade soups were delicious. You can tell everything is made with care. Oh and let’s not forget about the beer My husbands favorite is Weihenstephan. We’ll definitely be back!
