If you’re craving Japanese and looking for a quick bite to eat then try this place. It’s a cheap, no frills type place. We had the unagi with rice, chicken noodles story fry and katsu curry. Food was good, I like that it’s run by actual Japanese people. The restaurant is quite cramped and they only take cash(there is an arm around the corner)

Finding this place felt divinely guided. Food is spectacular, it is our favourite restaurant and we don’t live nearby. 3rd time going back there today, each time we only had to wait 5 minutes even when it’s super busy for our food, always comes piping hot, consistent in the quality, flavour and portion sizes. They make it the same every time! Our absolute favourite is the Tofu Chilli Don and my partner isn’t a vegetarian. Would love to know how they do it but the tofu in the chilli don dish is so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Best value for money and they are not stingy on portion size. I think we will be saying ‘Pompoko’ in our sleep. We will be coming back again and again. Staff are also super lovely and friendly.

Absolutely amazing. Food was fresh, hot and crispy. Tasted beautiful.
Staff were delightful and friendly and really enjoyed the time there.
The place is clean and cozy. We sat downstairs but there is seating upstairs and outside.
We already want to go back.

Small but tidy place to eat-in. Low price for all the dishes but super delicious. All the Beto rice that we ordered are outstanding. We are Asian and we can tell you that Pompoko is the place that you must to visit in Brighton if you love Japanese food especially the Beto. Can fill up your tummy easily. Thank you all the nice staffs!

The restaurant I always take people to when they’re visiting Brighton! Staff are always very friendly and food comes quick. Never had a bad meal and for such a reasonable price, it’s one of my favourite places to eat in Brighton!

This Japanese restaurant offered a genuinely satisfying experience. We were thinking to try some japanese dish. And WOW! The food was full of flavour, served hot, and tasted even better than expected. Prices were surprisingly reasonable, making it feel like great value for money. What stood out most was the quick service — no long waiting, just prompt and friendly staff who made the meal smooth and enjoyable. Overall, it was the kind of place you’d happily visit again. Thank you!

Yesterday I visited Pompoko in Brighton. The restaurant was extremely busy and the seating area on the ground floor felt very cramped, with tables placed very close together.
When we arrived, the staff initially told us there were no available tables, even though I could clearly see empty tables. Eventually we were seated and we placed our order.
I have to say the food was tasty and we enjoyed the meal. However, the overall experience was ruined by the hygiene and cleanliness of the place.
When we went upstairs to wash our hands, the stairs and the whole area leading to the toilets were very dirty. The handrails were worn out and dirty, and the toilet itself was in a very poor condition. The ventilation/extractor fan was covered in dust, the sink area was not clean, and overall it looked like the toilets had not been properly cleaned in a long time. The hand dryer was also very weak and barely worked.
It’s really disappointing because this place clearly has a high number of customers, but it feels like no effort is being made to maintain basic cleanliness or improve the condition of the restaurant. It definitely needs renovation and much better hygiene standards.
Good food, but the lack of cleanliness is unacceptable. I would not recommend it until improvements are made

I’ve been a fan of pompoko for many years, always recommending it to my friends who frequent Brighton. In particular the Nan ban don was one of my favourite dishes, which I consistently got over the years.
Unfortunately, the quality was as of today, simply dreadful. Dry chicken, flavourless sauce, drenched in mayo. The signature sweet and sour mirin based sauce was completely off. I ate about half and returned apologetically; staff were kind enough to make me another dish. I appreciate this was excellent service.
Regrettably the replacement pork katsu was also not edible. Some pieces of pork were so dry and sinewy that I couldn’t cut them into pieces. Looking at other recent reviews this is a common theme, which along with the now high cash only prices, has totally brought down the value of pompoko.
I’m extremely disappointed to say I won’t be visiting again and can’t in good faith recommend this once iconic restaurant any longer l.

Amazing food, fast service very cheap for the value you get. I got the sesame chicken one and omg it was amazing. Very big serving couldnt finish it. Gyoza was great too and 2 mains, 1 starter we only paid 24£. 12£ per person for a full quality meal eating out in brighton… amazing.
